I am soon to be accepted to 3rd battalion PPCLI and have been looking for information on the regimental history as well as the bases location. Any other pertenant information related to the 3rd battalion and it‘s base would greatly be appreciated. (example. battalions morale, pride, and recreational facilities available)

3rd PPCLI was based in Victoria BC approx 15 years ago at CFB Esquimalt before packed up and moved to Edmonton. I had a little house at the main entrance that people went to relax and watched movies. The Carlton Club and Tutor House Pub just up the hill was where all they all hung on the weekends and time off. As for histroy that sounds a lil like trival pursuit... im out !

i was under the understanding that 3 PPCLI was not in victoria but were at CFB chilliwack which shut down. CFB Esquimalt was and still is an active naval base and was never shut down.

CFB Esquimalt, did indeed house a battalion of the PPCLI at Work Point Barracks. After the Picklies left, NOTC Venture took over Work Point. The recruit school is also located at Work Point Barracks.

Securitas

I was flying over Work Point a few weeks ago, noticed what appeared to be some new construction, is this for the recruit school? What kind of training are they doing there? BMQ? Is this to take some of the pressure off of Saint Jean?

Just curious?

im in my 10th week at BMQ in esquimalt (work point) my grad is on monday and i will be off to wainwright. im from edmonton and will be posted with third batallion ppcli they are in edmonton i live only a couple blocks from the base. both first and third are there..

My life would have been so much simpler if I had taken BMQ @ Esquimalt :D

Basic training schools were set up in Esquimalt and another base (which escapes me at this time) to help elleviate the backlog of recruits waiting to go to St Jean. Other than the recruit school and the Naval Officers school, there isn‘t much else there, base transport, PMQ‘s, cadets.........thats about it.

Chilliwack was base to Field Engineers. Also Officer Cadets did their basic training there. I had a posting there in late ‘80s.

3 VP HQ was in Chiliwack for two years in the mid 90‘s during the 10/90 experience after the Bn was reduced, first to a small cbt sup coy and one rifle coy summer 93. The rifle coy joined 1 VP for Croatia summer 94 and the remainder was scattered to militia units as an experiment. The battalion was reformed in Edmonton summer 96, the Para Coy had been in Edm from the disbandment of 2 Cdo in 95. So yes for a little while the 3rd was (technically) in Chiliwack. js

we are just above Edmonton now, where i wish we was in esquimalt or even chilliwack again.

The construction at Work Point is for a new mess hall. The older one does not have any restrooms and is condemned for that reason.

The Basic Training Co at Work Point is being shut down after this year, per my BRT staff. They‘ll do one more set of four platoons in the new year and then close down and have all Basic Training done at St Jean.

Ahh the Carlton...has that place ever changed (had a chance to visit it last year and the school now in Work Point has changed the entire atmosphere). Work Point was the best posting I‘ve had, or probably will ever have. The batallion then was terrific. We stuck together in ways I haven‘t seen since. When the last remaining company was attached to 1VP for Croatia, our performance on the work up training spoke for itself.

If the PPCLI had remained here, I‘d have opted for them. I have great memories of those guys from when I grew up there. It‘s a shame that they relocated.

To all,what happened wilh 3 V.P. was,
(Hollywood Battalion, reason of the name on the Island and only did parade‘s etc because cost to much to go Wainright etc. for Ex.‘s)

Ended up doing the 10/90 system most were sent on to the other battlion‘s.
The remainder whent to the Westies and Seaforth‘s
to try the 10/90 system.

It did work in the Westies but not in the Froth‘s as far as I know.

My first kick at the can for overaseas was in Dundurn (95,) under the Westie‘s with 3rd Bat. Snr Nco‘s.
W.O.Vigue,,W.O.Estey,W.O.Conik,M.W.O.Day,and other Snr Nco‘s from the 3rd Bat. who made up the 10/90 Bat. with the Westies

VS - I was sworn in Victoria in Jan ‘98.

To be honest, I had been doing my research and at the time I was divided between the PPCLI & RCR. In the end it was availability. A position within the RCR was available 2 weeks prior. Settled that eh.
