Moon clips (and half clips) are totally normal for non-rimmed cases like 9mm. Otherwise they cartridge isnt held secure.

Not only that but the original S&W made M1917 revolvers could shoot .45 ACP without the moon clips due to the fact they machined shoulders into the cylinder for the rimless cartridge. That being said you needed to eject them with a pencil or something of that nature if you weren't using moon clips.

And the early Colts didn't have the shoulder so the round would move forward. Later production changed it so you could load without a moon clip.
