Where you guys think it could be effectively fought? Which tactics could be used on them to counter the M1A1 Abrams? I think a war in Russian territory would suit perfectly.

Let's say thry are placed on top of a hill. There is a forest behind them. as soon as they spot the enemy (Chinese Type XX, M1 one of those two) the fall back; hiding themselves in a sort of trench, and there are sort of channels at both sides of the hill, leading directly to the entrenched T-72s. these channels would aim directly to enemy positions, helping the ATGMs on their trayectory as they add further protection to the duged-in armor. The forest would "led" the enemy to think they have nowhere else to go or that they are partially covered by it

What in the name of Gawd are you nattering about??

OK.

Well you come onto a forum filled with serving and retired members of the CF and allied militaries and out of the blue ask a question like that. You give no other information beyond a situation and you wonder at the reaction... ::)

What you would do is dig deep pits with ramps at both ends, fortified in the bottom with rocks and the heads of JTF-2 wannabes to take the weight of the t-72s.  hide the tanks in them and cover with branches and dirt and dead secret squirrels and other camouflages.  the M1s would drive past and you would emerge from the pits and shoot them in the ass and they would be deader than the air space between a socialist's ears.

Given the record of T-72s involved in offensive operations (Syrian T-72s against Israel in the Bekka valley in 1982) and defensive battles ("Operation Desert Storm/Desert Sabre" 1991; OIF 2003); I would have thought that question was well answered with "real life" examples.

Short answer if you don't want to Google it: It's crap

Tanks Art.. ;)
for putting the, professional, no nonsense answer to the question. Thereby ruining all the fun we could have had with this one. :D

This thread is dead.

Big Boss,
Do some research so that you at least have a starting point to ask your question from.

Thought-provoking question - if the Americans had T-72's and the Iraqis had the M1 Abrams and M-60s, who would have won?

(hint: your answer may betray your ideas on the people-ideas-equipment construct)

Just a small thought. Or idea or something.  In WW2 the sherman was far inferior to the German MBT of the time and the only thing that turned the tide was the numbers the Allies had in theater.

Russian tactics in the Cold War were were basically to overwhelm us with numbers.

There is no real comparison on the two. M1 /T-72  Both had their merits and their down falls. one on one the M-1 Wins hands down. But in an all out classic clash of the titans. Bear against the eagle mid 80 cold war battle royale . I am sure we would have had our proverbial asses handed to us in Europe.

I am not so sure mover...there are a number of studies out there pointing out the serios shortomings of the powertrain etc of soviet armour......

They would have needed their incredible advantage in AFV's just to get enought to into contact at a 1:1 ratio

It would have been a very hard fought battle, but the Americans would have won due to their superior operational doctrine and crew and individual training.

Our poisioned, diseased and glowing radioactive asses...Soviet "Deep Battle" doctrine involved a lot more than just sheer numbers of tanks (and indeed, the Independent Tank Battalion followed the Motor Rifle Regiment into battle. For a very good (the best IMO, but you decide) classic Eagle vs the Bear novel read Ralph Peters book "Red Army", which is told from the Soviet side.

Read it and as for the americn doctrine and individual training training. This does not remind me of of the Army that america had in the 80's... First Clash was another good one.
