You can definitely ask your BTL CofC about that...if you need some direct assistance from "within the trade", drop me a PM.

408 is TacHel so no AES Ops but...it's the best choice if you remain in Edmonton, IMO.  I know some folks who've had some lousy BTL waits (Wainwright...Shilo).  Being around a flying Sqn is still being around a flying Sqn.

Even if it is "army aviation".  ;D

408 Sqn took some of their BTL guys with them to Mali working ops, can’t say there are too many chilling their heels on the BTL that get an operational tour before type training.

Regards
G2G

Friggin TacHel showin' off!  ;D

Honestly...good on them!  I spent my BTL time at a MH Sqn and flew...a big, fat O times...nadda once.

Congrats on being accepted into the trade.

As for BTL in Edmonton, yes you can request it via your BTL CoC, however it doesn't mean you'll get it. Often there must be a compassionate reason for moving unqualified BTL AES Op around the country. It boils down to who'll pay for it. In the meantime, try to learn the RCAF culture, particularly the aircrew world, lingo, etc. The AES Op BTL manager is our SOA CWO at 2 CAD and he'll get in touch with you in the near future. He'll be the one loading you on all pre-req courses and also on BACQ.

Lastly, enjoy your next year as you'll be learning lots of cool things and taking some really good courses. Once again, welcome to the trade!

Thanks EEV! Just gotta play the game a little longer

I think I might find myself at 408 now...

Honestly, as a BTL at a Sqn with AES Ops you won't do much "AES Op" stuff.  I've got 15 BTL AES Op Cpl's and Avr's to employ at a Sqn; as they are unqualified in the trade...well, there are limited ways to employ them.  I don't see a real huge benefit to being at a LRP or MH Sqn for BTL...the big one might be PAX flights but...you'll still likely have that opportunity at 408.

Enjoy the BTL time, though;  once you get into the training system it can be non-stop for a while.

My interview went really well with the BPSO earlier this week but unfortunately, after getting my medical approved by Ottawa, Toronto stated it is not acceptable to apply as an AESOP it looks like.

I got a G3 under Geographical Factor because of a medication I took. G3 means that they will check before I deploy to see if everything's fine with me. At first, I was allright with it but since it blocks me from receiving an offer as an AESOP, I gotta act.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience regarding a "G3" medical category and how to overturn it. As I understood, they only rated me that way because I have an history with medication, even if I never really needed it and also not taking it anymore. My plan is to discuss this issue with the doctor at my unit and get a reference with a specialist to prove I don't need it in order to get over that G3 rating I had.

Any advice in that case would be gladly appreciated. I am motivated to become an AESOP and I don't want to give up on a possible great career opportunity.

First point;  AUMB is the Aerospace Underwater Medical Board (aka "Toronto") that is part of CFEME Toronto, part of DRDC (IIRC).  Short version; only AUMB can award permanent medical categories for aircrew, drivers, submariners.

Next, I just want to make sure you know the difference between a G3 and a G2 (min requirement for AES Op).  You can read them here.  https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/policies-standards/medical-standards-military-occupations/medical-category-system.html

I don't know (and encourage you to not disclose on a public forum) the circumstances about medication use, etc but I think you are taking the correct approach, but would amend it to "...to discuss this issue with the Doctor...." to "discuss with a flight surgeon if possible".  I don't know if you have access to one, but they (in my experience) look at things a little differently than someone not trained in aviation medicine/occupational medicine.

If they are supportive of your points, then maybe further action can be taken with a specialist, etc to satisfy AUMB.  I am curious if they indicated "not fit AT THIS TIME"...vice "not fit" suggesting a permanent "blocker" to the required MedCat for AES Op.  There is a difference.

I'd highly encourage a well-thought out conversation with a flight surgeon if possible, and maybe they will support....if they can, or the Base/Wing Surgeon, reach out to AUMB and ask for clarification if anything can be done to secure a G2 determination...maybe "reapply after 12 months" will be the answer.  Then you can decide "wait and pursue" or throw in the towel.

I did have a contact with the flight surgeon that I did my medical with and he suggested that I get a reference to a specialist with my doctor at my home unit in order to satisfy the requirements of CFEME Toronto.

Thank you for your usual quick input ! I'll make sure to check if they indicated not fit at this time or simply not fit. Would be a game changer.

If a Flt Srgn is suggesting...that is all I'd need to take the next steps.

Good luck!

Good day,

I am currently on BTL. Will I remain on BTL at my current base until I get put on course. It would be help full to know how long I should be waiting until getting a posting msg to Winnipeg. This is so I can know if I should buy a vehicle now and if I should get internet hooked up.

Thanks,

How long have you been on BTL?  Have you completed AMT yet?  Have you had any emails, etc from the 2 CAD AES Op Trg CWO yet?  Is your security clearance the required level, or is it processing?

You can PM me more details if you'd like for confidentiality.

I was curious if anyone had any information about VOT-T selections. I have been told by the BPSO that my file has passed Ottawa's scrutiny and went on to selection. The trade still has 19 out of 20 slots for selection.  The BPSO has no information when AES Op selection boards are taking place. Any chance anyone knows on here?  If not, I will continue to be patient and wait.  Thank you in advance for any information.

I don't know myself;  not something I track usually.  No info was in the VOTP CANFORGEN on dates/timelines??

In the CANFORGEN there was no specifics with regards to when the AES Op boards sit for VOTP.  The BPSO does not even know. I thought perhaps someone here may have a more narrowed down idea.  The CANFORGEN just gives general information of offers deadlines; the end of March. With the non-selection messages by the end of May.  I am just itching for the outcome.

I am determined to be an AES Op and after 2 years of trying I just really want this.  I finished AMT today and am in the process of finishing BEW.  I talked to my career manager to let him know my intentions, he said he would support me. I am doing everything I can to line myself up for success in my future.

Thank you for your reply EITS.

Well done on your perseverance- we need a whole bunch of more AESOPs.

Copy that.  I know some trades are doing boards *now* or very close to the left and right of *now* (I have a mbr processing for a COT so have been in comm's with the local PSO office).

I've asked a question on our trade net (closed FB group) that the SOA is on re: VOTP selection;  stand by to stand by.  8)  If he isn't sure, I'll ask a PSO friend of mine...

I'll echo Ditch's comment about perseverance; BZ.  He is 101% accurate on the 'whole bunch' more AES Ops needed.  The demand for us in only going to increase for the near to middle (*yesterday*= near to...10 years out?) future.

I will say...if/when you get accepted, don't be discouraged if there are delays in your VOT date and your training in Wpg @ 402 date.  There is a fair size BTL for our trade and the initial occ trg pipeline is fixed at this time and can't be widened.  I always say...enjoy your BTL time though because once you get into the trg system, it can be a bit of a ride.  Once you're out of it, you will be at an operational Sqn.  Unless you're in a ground job or at an OTU (which you won't be on your 1st tour...), the op tempo is sometimes significant.

AMT already...what is your current MOSID?  (feel free to fire me a PM if you...)  Do you know any of the folks over @ 402?

I am an AC Op; I asked my chain of command if I could go on the course and was told to load myself through the school.  I did it on my shift days off.  My chain is very supportive of the VOT process I am going through.  It was a good course and I learned a lot.  I do know some of the instructors teaching at the school over at 402 Sqn; I worked with them when they were at 1 CAD.  I did notice that the BTL list, as of Jul 19, was quite large; 80 plus.  I just hope if this all works out this year that I will be put in a BTL position that I can learn more about the AES Op trade; like assisting with training (somewhere over at 402 Sqn) or maybe helping over at CFSSAT.  I don't really want to be put on waivers to continue what I am currently employed to do right now, as AES Ops have line numbers where I work.  I enjoy training and have always loved the ride.  My last posting was at a tactical control radar squadron and we were always very busy, I think well at that posting I spent 1.5 years out of the 3 years there away.  Suffice to say I enjoy being busy and enjoy a high ops tempo and my family is quite used to it.

Thank you for asking around about the boards.

Time will tell and patience will prevail for the future.

Respectfully.

Good morning,

I was wondering of anyone who completed Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator occupational training, of how difficult did you find the training?

Some people find it a challenge, others not as much.  Some of it depends on aptitude, motivation, dedication and time management (big piece of being successful).

I'd start about here in this thread...skim through, lots of info already.

If you have any question after that...fire away, and I'll do what I can to answer.
