Alternative to Dress Uniform

well there is a Christmas dinner coming up and some of us did not receive our DU's yet... i   would just like to know what would be suitable alternative, specifically for females. Is there something in the dress regulations? Additionally, would a beret be worn.

Best ask your unit what they expect you to wear. I don't think there's any CF-wide reg on dress in those circumstances.

I would recommend conservative civilian dress (umm...no beret obviously!)  Check with your unit, but for males in our unit, either combats (if ordered) or civilian dress.  For males collared shirt and tie, dress pants, shoes (no jeans or runners) with females wearing the equivalent of "business dress".  Basically, look nice.    Your unit will let you know if they want you in combats or civvies.

In the old day's it was a suit or a blazer with suitable trousers and shoes.

Males without DEU. Jacket and tie. Female, conservative skirt and blouse or dress.

I can vouche for the male suit look. My Unit instructed me to wear a suit and simply that. I'm not aware of female non-DEU Dress.

I was in the same situation last year, I just wore a nice top and a long skirt. It worked out fine.

Sometimes dress codes/rules can be a bit old-fashioned, even obsolete
(i.e. once upon a time when the Army was predominantly/overwhelmingly male, there was even ... gasp ... male chauvinism - females were "allowed"/encouraged to wear a dress, but it was a subtle slight against their acceptance as "real" soldiers - ever heard the expression "... wears the pants in the family"?)

So, if what's good for the gander is good for the goose, then there shouldn't be any problem with presenting a professional appearance by wearing a classic/classy navy blue suit or dress jacket/blazer ... and if you can find a regimental tie, so much the better.

Everyone else has already told you, but I want to post.
Just wear a suit, or nice (dress) clothing.  Not jeans or anything like that.  No beret either.

Overheard our RSM today - was reminded of the reason for civvies vice CADPAT is that if the unit goes "downtown" after the dinner, you can't really pub crawl in combats.  So either DEU or nice civvies.

just a comment towards that..If the unit goes out after the dinner... you could always change into civvies as our CO informed us. Deus or cadpat...those are the rules as laid out by our unit

My unit just had it's christmas dinner over the weekend.....and for the first time the new privates without DEUs wore combats....now call me old fashioned, but I find that to be a load of crap.  This is only my opinion, I think it should be suit and tie for males, and appropriate long skirt and sweater/blouse for females, it seems obsurd to me for them to be wearing the EXACT same uniform style that they just finished schlepping sandbags in earlier.

heehee....our riflemen had lectures on tent routine in the morning (in CADPAT), then sports in the afternoon (PT kit) and then the dinner (DEUs)....they changed clothes as often as a woman hosting the Oscars...

We just had our Christmas dinner on Saturday and like yourself a few of us didn' thave DEU's yet. We were instructed to wear a nice pants and shirt, tie and jacket were optional. I decided to wear a suit and that's pretty much what everyone did. Anyone who didn't have DEU's was in a suit.

I'd rather be a bit overdressed - you can always take your jacket/tie off if you want.

Thanks to everyone for their replys.. We ended up having our Christmas dinner last Wednesday and I opted for a nice black dress/blazer combo. Did not turn out too bad
