Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Seaspan (owned by Washington Marine of Ohio) has teamed with Bollinger Shipyards of Louisiana, Rauma Shipyards of Finland and Aker Arctic.

Their offer is based on the Multi-Purpose Vessel (Multi-Purpose Icebreaker) ordered by the Canadian Coast Guard with an expectation of 16 vessels to be built by Seaspan.

Like the AOPS design, both the RCN and CCG variants all these hulls are PC4 class - Year-round operation in thick first-year ice, which may include old ice inclusions as per Transport Canada - displacement of about 9000 tonnes
PC4 vessels also include Fed Nav's MV Umiak I, MV Nunavik, andMV Arvik Ibulk freighters operating out of Voisey Bay and Deception. They displace about 32,000 tonnes.
...
The Azipod propulsion system, which was proposed for the AOPS, has been employed in the NoCGV Svalbard and in the Double Acting Ships which, like the PC4s, are not expected to require separate ice-breaking services from heavy icebreakers.

Aker Arctic is also involved in the two PC2 class heavy icebreakers - displacement of approximately 26,000 tonnes (similar to the JSS)

Once you get past PC4, into the PC 3,2 & 1 (or equivalent), the number of operating vessels in those classes dwindle exponentially. Canada with 16x PC4, two heavies and up to 6 mediums along with the AOP's (8x PC 5 hull, PC 4 bow), Canada will have likley the 2nd or third largest and most capable fleets in the world.

It would be interesting to compare the ice on the eastern shores of Hudson and James with that of the Gulfs of Bothnia and Finland.

Christening of HMSC Robert Hampton Grey, the last of the RCN's 6 x AOPS took place on Saturday, Aug 9th:

@SeaKingTacco I hope this crest is to your liking. Not a Corsair but...

Personally all the AOPS crests are above average if not down right awesome. This one is pretty cool. Naming them after people is a great idea. Who wouldn't want to sail on a ship that was named for a VC recipient who also was part of an attack on the Tirpitz. All those named were badasses in their own way.

Not a fan of the AOPS, but I’m happy to see Gray get some more recognition. Canadians in the Fleet Air Arm don’t get the recognition they deserve.

These really make the most of the CPF crests look kind of pathetic. I loved my time on CHA, but that has to be the lamest warship crest I've ever seen.

"All Challenges Squarely Met".

I worked that phrase into PERs I wrote on the ship.... "LS Bloggins squarely met the challenge of XXX and successfully resolved etc..."

They definitely phoned in Charlottetown and Summerside.. They just took the center of the city and provincial flags respectively.

How exactly do you make a PEI ship crest intimidating or aggressive ?

A killer potato ? A potato with the blight ?
I think they shit the bed generally with the naming of the Halifax class, but they could have gone with something like the provincial bird (blue jay) or really anything other than a few squares.

The unofficial crest with Screech the dog is pretty fun though, something that incorporated Screech would at least be interesting.

In general, we suck at warship names and crests (outside the tribal class), so it's weird that AOPs, which is a non combatant with no real offensive or defensive capabilities has pretty fighty crests and slogans.

I agree with you.

I do like the idea of using VC holders.

For sure, and I'm sure some people knew who they all were, but I hadn't heard of some of them. I think it's a great way to honour someone's heroics while keeping their memory alive, as a lot of people will learn about them through the ship names.

On the flip side, when you hear what they did, and compare it to what some people did in Afghanistan and elsewhere makes you wonder why we got stingy with VCs (but went the opposite with battle honours for CHA in Libya).

A blue jay would definitely work for Toronto.
