I thought I would start a poll and topic for all of those future recruits interested in the Armourd Corps.

I know when I applied for the Armourd Corps (my first choice), I was looking for something involved in the combat trade.  The infantry, although very respectable and challenging, just didn't quite do it for me. So I looked into the Armourd Corps. This seemed intersting! During that time, the Armourd Corps offered the front line combat capability (tanks), the recce ability (with all the technology and equipment knowledge/training), the Assault troops training (I felt to be close to the infantry role and there for the best of both worlds). It all seemed very exciting.

Now, the Armourd Corps has removed the Tanks (understandable), they have dis-continued Assault troops (fine),  and have moved more or less to a strictly recce role, at least until the transformation is complete and they have the THOR and TOW completed in the next upcomming years.

So I guess what I and perhaps future recruits would like to know/understand is if the Armourd Corps. has lost all of the excitement and versatility it once had and perhaps its appeal to recruits/soldiers? and if so, do we have to look at other combat trades to find what we are looking for?

All imput is appreciated! thank you...

:salute:

Just a point of clarification - although I posted an article mentioning the THOR system as a possible candidate for the MMEV (Multi-Mission Effects Vehicle) to the best of my knowledge it has not been adopted.  As far as I know Oerlikon has been granted a development contract to convert the ADATS systems into the MMEV by some major modifications that include adding additional missile types.  Again, to the best of my knowledge this has nothing to do with the THOR system.

I speculated on the THOR just a couple of days before Oerlikon was awarded the contract.

If you are using my reference as the basis for your continued reference to THOR I apologize for causing confusion.  On the other hand if you have other information confirming that THOR is associated with the Oerlikon offer I should be very interested in seeing that.

Cheers. :)

We have several threads in these twelve pages of the Armour Forums dealing with various aspects of what you are asking.  A quick search may be more helpful.

Big T,

If you go to a Recce Sqn (which is the most likely outcome right now) then you have excellent odds of having the opportunity to be part of an operational deployment.  On these operations you will spend much of your time off the camp with your Patrol.  As a Patrol you'll find yourselves off on your own for long periods of time conducting reconnaissance and surveillance tasks (among other things).  A Patrol must be self-sufficient and able to take care of itself.  You'll have a wide variety of tasks.  One day you're on a hilltop OP, the next you're escorting the United Nations Security Council through town at high speed.

So while you won't be able to switch between tanks and recce you will find yourself very busy and I think that you'll still find it very rewarding.  I'm a tanker who adapted to the recce concept.  Being on tanks was great, but the downside was that with the exception of a handful of guys you never deployed as a tanker.  I had my own crisis of faith a couple of years ago, but being part of a Recce Sqn on an operational tour cured me of that.  I'm a believer!

Best of luck,

2B

I was actually refering to what I had read on the actual "Transformation" section of the official Canadian Army website, they mentioned these systems as being apart of what is to come?!

Thanks Wallace! (also, if Wallace is your true last name, that is awsome!) I realize there may be some topics that discuss some, maybe all? of what I am discussing but my intent was to have one topic discussing them all in depth for my personal knowledge. As well as for future recruits that may be searching this forum for the same answers... (New, To the point Topic?!) (I know how this forum does not like to have re-posted topics over again/Same questions asked again)

And 2Bravo thanks for the post, muchly appreciated! Especially comming from someone in the Armourd Corps. who has personal experience!

We got the tanks for a while, 8-10 tanks are coming back to Gagetown, take the point.

Could you link to the reference?  I can't seem to find it.

I think I was refering to your Article (yikes) haha, wow, sorry!  :o

No worries.  My fault for causing confusion.

I think I figured out what I had done to get so confused... I took the THOR you were talking about, and mixed it up with this MMEV talked about on the Official Army site (linked below)... sorry, my bad!

It Reads:

"DGLCD has played a key role in development of the Direct Fire Unit (DFU), based in the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians), a transformation project involving three vehicles, a combination of guns and missiles and state-of-the-art sensing and communication systems. While the DFU won't be delivered for a while yet, the Army is now well along the way to approving the Multi-Missions Effects Vehicle, the successor to ADATS, and delivering TOW Under Armour on a LAV chassis. The Army plans to fight those two vehicles together with the Mobile Gun System, providing a very agile and lethal direct fire capability."

I found it from this link: (Second Paragraph under the heading "A new level of success in acquiring Army systems")
