Army Medical Technicians

Hello, I was hoping to get some information on Medical Technicians and the purple trades in general. I have read somewhere that if you are accepted as a Medical Technician, you can request or choose what element you want to be in. I recognize that the uniform doesn't really matter because of the whole unification thing, but some people might simply not want to be in the Navy or Air Force, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way or anything. Is it the case that you are just assigned to an element or you get some degree of choice?

(If this has been already covered, I apologize, I looked and couldn't find anything pertaining directly to what I'm saying here)
