Army Reserve Restructuring

Assuming your employer allows military leave,
Provincial legislation is pretty unified at this point that while on military leave, you dont lose seniority. The CFLC worked very hard the last 10 years the harmonize policies in every province. The bigger issue is enforcement, if you get fired for taking time off. Even if yiu navigate the system, which takes time, an employer might get a slap on the wrist and you are still out of a job.

There is no teeth to the protection

Read that post and it brings up a very valid point.

Right.

Our collective agreement, if injured on the job,

Employees who are placed in a permanent alternate position, due to an occupational injury/illness (as defined by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board), will be subject to the normal assessment period . If the pre-injury rate of pay is higher than the relocated position rate, then the pre-injury rate is to be maintained. It is understood that the pre-injury rate is subject to all wage increases negotiated.

If injured off the job,

Employees who are placed in a permanent alternate position, due to a non-occupational injury or illness, will be subject to the normal assessment period and will receive the wage rate of the position to which they are assigned.

, if you get fired for taking time off.

Guess it depends on the employer.

Some might, if you request Leave, and Leave is denied, but you decided to take Leave anyway, my employer would consider you AWOL.

Not to suggest that is fair or unfair. YMMV

I fail to see how Toronto paramedic compensation does anything for the compensation an injured reservist gets as per the Facebook posts main thesis.

That is a direct quote from the Facebook thesis.

A serious service injury can permanently collapse your civilian life — and the system is not designed to replace what you lose.

It would have permanently collapsed mine. YMMV

Ive had two employers in the past, when handing my notice of intent to take Resevist leave, tell me "HR says the only way to do this is to let you go and rehire you when you return" spoiler alert, they didnt

Can confirm... a 10 month workup to a 6 month tour is a great way to go out of business, etc etc ;)

My troops in the reg force who work as bouncers and uber drivers get to call themselves twice the citizen to right?

We had Military Leave. With pay,

Employees can take a leave of absence with pay, for the two week period of absence, to attend the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve Training Program.

All benefits continue during the leave.

An employee’s service is not affected by the leave. An employee’s vacation entitlement, and pension credit do not change.

Why not go Reg Force ?
Some locations for bases leave something to be desired for many.
One of the large selling points to hire more Reservists if presented the proper way to protentional members.

I just learned something new. They use to just have job protection for Provincial Employees, Which many of the Municipalities followed along with. I wonder if the Major Unions in the province have changed their polices and Master agreements to reflect this.

Fully onside, but there is a plethora of trades and options in the CAF. And not all of them are Army, and not all of them will ever go to Shiloh or Petawawa as examples.

True but there is also the benefit of being able to choose where and when you deploy as well.

As a volunteer you can choose your poison. Regs loses that.

If anything you can potentially have a much more interesting career in the Reserves as if your motivated and with the right CoC you could take courses you like regularly, choose deployments or postings, etc.

Regs you can’t nearly take as many courses as your still holding a line somewhere and they need you to work as well, vs a Reservist who doesn’t have those day to day duties.

Im not longer in the place in my life where I am regularly applying for jobs, but there would be times I would be tempted to just not mention the fact that I'm reservist, as it is not a protected ground (which it probably should be).
