They can still fuck up your pay so badly that, at no notice, you'll be require to repay several hundred dollars

After I saw the guy get a 99c cheque, someone told us a story about someone getting a cheque for $0.01. He decided to frame it and put it on his wall. Fast forward a few months later and the MPs were at his door telling him to cash that cheque because it was messing up the unit’s pay system.

most army units as well, 90% of my OR is non clerk trades, several brigades have centralized their clerks to try to off set the shortage. All the more reason we should be pulling in civilians, especially for the reserves, way to many people are getting pay screwed up because pay sheets and other documents are lost etc, and inconsistent practices from unit to unit. Example some units you gotta get the FIN code from the CoC, other units the OR provides it.

There was actually a civvy OR person at my unit. I don't know if they're supposed to do that, but it happens.

About 20 years ago most Army Reserve units were provided standard work descriptions and funding to pay for a single civilian clerk in the OR.

It had mixed results for a number of reasons.

Do they still have to march up to the table, come to attention and get handed a cheque for 99c?

Good God. I remember that!

I also remember the time we would be paid cash at sea by the Log O, only to keep a few dollars for canteen purchases and hand back the cash to the Log O for safekeeping in his safe until we hit shore where we could deposit it at the bank. Good times!

We had one of those! For awhile.

A very nice lady turned up unannounced and out of the blue, Ms. PS 3.7 or whatever, then just as quickly disappeared.

I just assumed that she was harassed out of the building but didn't hear anything confirming or denying my suspicions...

Last couple times I went to the RCEME school, half the OR at regimental was civi.
