B.C. Government (Conservative Majority), 2026-(NLT)2031

Raincoats on, raincoats off... keep shoveling the cash...

Les Leyne: Massey Tunnel project cancelled, but boots still on the ground

The election of a new government that no longer wants a tunnel doesn’t seem to have made much difference yet.

Last summer the NDP government decided to break the contract with the construction consortium and retender bids for the main work. It was billed as “Moving Forward,” although it looked a lot like backing up and starting over.

A few weeks later, they admitted the expected cost of the project had jumped to $8.5 billion.

The Conservative Party claims it can put a bridge up for $6 billion, but has not yet produced any analysis or explanation for that budget.

The sunk costs over the last 13 years on all the studies add far more to the real spend, and the delays endured by hundreds of thousands of drivers (including Vancouver-bound Islanders) are incalculable.

But as with the Site C dam, the fast ferries and any number of other delayed, over-budget public projects, it’s part of living in Beautiful B.C.
