bodyguards

DFW2T,

Interesting stuff. It would be great if you wrote about some of your personal experiences in Iraq for the forum.  Take care.

PS just out of curiousity what military experience did you have before you went private? cheers, mdh

There has been a great deal of talk lately in Canada and the UK about people who have quit the military to work as bodyguards. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has recently done that. Is it working out for you? Living up to your expectations job wise, money wise? Anyone working in Iraq?

Most of the work right now is static security slots entailing physical site security (glorified security guards with weapons). For those with the trng, close protection pays more and offers more opportunities.   Unless you have a background in combat arms or law enforcement, there are few opportunities. Even then, you will still need to go through certification in close protection, otherwise no principle will hire you.

Subjects you can expect to cover are: Threat Accessment, mostly based on the ECSP model. Residential Concerns. Intrusive Detection Systems. Vehicle Armouring. EVOC. PIN. Route Selection. IEDs. Static and Dynamic Security. Protective Formations (rings of safety, cover and evac drills). The Advance Team. Targeted Violence. Countersurveillance. Small Arms. Body Armour. Emergency Evecuation. First Aid. Hostage Survival and Rescue.

Contrary to what the media portrays, most of the work is uneventful and when a protective detail goes defensive it has failed its mission.

I haven't worked in Iraq, so I don't know much about it.

Happy trails.

Really interesting comments DFW2T. In fact in reading them, it surprises me that more people don't leave the service for private work, although I suspect many simply wouldn't qualify. Sounds like tough standards. It's really unfortunate though that I keep hearing of the lack of Canadians out there. What exactly is the problem? Do we not put ourselves out there enough (brag!!!!)? I don't know anything about it but I'm assuming that we as Canadians are as competent as the Brits or Americans.
