Well the good news is, there probably weren't that many cars around back then  >:D

LOL. Obviously he was speaking of the time period well-prior to when staff cars with drivers had to show up to take the BComd's wive Christmas shopping (itself now thankfully gone the way of the dodo bird too)  >:(.

This was in Shilo, so we could see the car coming for a couple of days. After a while we got pretty good at not confusing it with a tumbleweed.

I'd like this think this mentality has been left behind.  I can imagine Mrs EITS getting an "order" from some other wife of one of my superiors.  Although she is only 5' 2' and petite, I am sure she'd laugh at them (if she was in a good mood) or promptly tell them to pound sand in their hole of choice (if she was in a bad mood).

Having said that...my mom seemed to be of the "my husband is a WO so therefore I am too" kinda mentality.  Hard to explain but for those who've seen it, its like those Where's Waldo books..not really hard to pick it out.  My wife noticed actually, the first time we had both of our parents over for brunch last Fathers Day.  Oddly enough, my father never brings up "what trade/rank" he was...but my mom sure does.

Gets kinda old...

My 9D is exactly that, no bones about that, she certainly is the boss at home. I'm pretty sure that (God bless her red-necked soul) she would react.....in an unfavourable manner ( ;D) to any other spouse that tried anything like that.

I've seen it once, at the OC level and that was a good decade + ago. I sincerely hope that this kind of activity is truly (mostly) extinct.

I've found the US military very rank conscious, and I suppose by extension, that goes to the family groups as well.  I've heard the odd bit once in awhile these days here, but not as much as it used to be I'm sure.

brings back memories
i had the honour of driving general radley walters
when he visited lahr 1987
the rule was (on base star on the car)
off base (star off the car)
every once in a while id drive mrs radley and lady
friend about the base and off (star on)
off base i was questioned by some locals (germans)
who is she they'd ask
id say general walters
oh they'd say she must be an important lady
oh yes id say she's the generals significant other
anyway for driving (star on) the base i got a few
extras but you know it was bloody worth it....
general radley walters and his wife and friend
were well worth it,,,,

I have only had one bad experience with another member's wife attempting to intimidate my wife, and I summed her up immediately as soon as I saw it.  I wasn't rude about it, and even used the Talledaga Nights line "With all due respect..." (so I could say whatever I wanted), it came down to me telling her that she was the boss of nobody else's wife.

The closest experience I've heard of in this general area was that of the civilian husband of a serving officer being dressed down in the mess by another officer, because his hair was too long!  I guess the lesson was that wives who are in the CF are expected to ensure that their civilian husbands adhere to CF dress standards?  They left the mess, never to return.

That would have been an interesting harassment complaint.

This happened in the 80s.  Nobody was harrassed in the CF until at least 1992. ;D

Even after that.  I did my NCM basic in 1994 and there was no "SHARP" yet.  Everything was quite dull.

I never got sharpened till 98 it didn't work, so I had to be sharpend twice more in 99 till it worked. (I was quite dull apparently) Then we got diversified with Xs and Os.

We did how ever in the Strathcona's have a MCpl busted back to Trooper in 94 for making inappropriate comments to the clerk about their partner and other sexual harassing statements, while on R&R in Podgorica on the coast of Croatia
