Some good news: another one of our ISIS returnees, Jamal Borhot, has been convicted of terrorism offences.

I need to wait for the written decision on this one but I’d been given to understand there was also some national security evidence disclosure law being contested on this one, and the pending decision on this may be of some significance to other cases. If in fact this verdict is part of that, even better.

Will it be a true 16yr sentence or will it by 5-6yrs and then out on parole.

Mandatory parole comes at 2/3. He got credit for about four months’ pre-trial custody, so he has probably a bit over ten years to serve. While earlier parole is a possibility, it’s probably pretty unlikely in this case.

If I understand correctly, that makes any Canadian ISIS fighters now "guests" of Iraq, not the Kurds. If so, it'll be interesting to see how keen IRQ'll be about prosecuting them, versus "encouraging" other countries to take 'em back & prosecute them themselves.
