British Military Current Events

Forces TV has been given an exclusive look at the latest addition to the British Army's fleet, the Scout SV, or 'AJAX'.

The Scout SV armoured fighting vehicle is being developed by General Dynamics to replace the Scimitar, and is one of six planned variants ordered by the Ministry of Defence. It will be renamed AJAX when it comes into service.

It will boast 360 degree thermal and visual driving cameras, laser detection ability, and numerous other new features. It'll have a top speed of 43 mph, and will be able to pull up to 92 tonnes.

The UK seems to be having its own "soldier shoots downed Taliban" fracas ....
The wife of a jailed Royal Marine last night accused military chiefs of an insulting new cover-up.

Claire Blackman expressed fury over the latest crass attempt by top brass to sabotage her campaign for justice for her husband Alexander.

Sergeant Blackman, who is thought to be the only British serviceman jailed for murder on the battlefield, is serving life for shooting a fatally wounded Taliban insurgent.

But his lawyers are mounting a new appeal – backed by donations from thousands of Mail readers – after we revealed that:

    Vital evidence was withheld from his court martial in 2013;
    A high-flying colonel quit in disgust at being blocked from telling the truth at the hearing;
    The Ministry of Defence has plotted to cover up the internal report casting doubt on Blackman’s conviction.

(....)

Blackman, 41, told his trial he believed the dying insurgent – wounded while trying to ambush a troop of Royal Marines – was already dead when he shot him.

Following the case, the Royal Navy ordered Telemeter into what went wrong on the battlefield.

The Mail has learnt it was given a blistering insight into failings by Blackman’s superiors that directly affected his state of mind at the time of the shooting.

Yet instead of making these failings public, the MoD is trying to heap all the blame on Blackman ....

The bad pr for the Government over this incident will cause this case to be reviewed and the SGT will be released and reinstated with backpay.

Smart glasses, sensors and battlefield computers for soldier of the future

Sensor-laden body armour, a smart watch that monitors life signs and smart glasses with integrated cameras are all part of a futuristic design for military uniforms

British soldiers of the future will wear Google glass-style visors with head-up displays, body armour packed with sensors and carry smartphone-type computers onto the battlefield according to an MoD vision of battledress next decade.

‘Smart glasses’ will beam information straight into the soldiers’ line of vision and lightweight helmets will be fitted with cameras able to record and send battlefield images to commanders.

The recruit who died on a Army training exercise had just started her dream job, her family said.

Megan Park died during basic training at the Army Training Centre in Pirbright, Surrey, on Wednesday.

Miss Park, 21, was taken ill during a mile-and-a-half "light run".

Young female Army recruit Megan Park dies during basic training at Pirbright

Instructors carried out first aid, but were unable to save her.

An investigation has been launched, but sources said it appeared at first she had died from natural causes or a medical condition.

Her family said she was doing what she loved.

Royal Navy aims to put laser 'death ray' on ships by 2020
At arms fair in London, Admiral Sir George Zambellas says navy plans to demonstrate a directed energy weapon at sea by end of decade

The Royal Navy hopes to develop a ship-mounted “death ray” laser cannon by 2020, the first sea lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, has announced at one of the world’s biggest arms fairs.

The US navy has been experimenting with a laser to take out drones and damage enemy ships. The UK, hoping to build on the American experience, is looking to build something less cumbersome, more efficient, requiring less manpower and much more destructive.

This year the Ministry of Defence said it had instructed its development arm, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), to look at building a prototype. But Zambellas went much further when he addressed a group of senior navy personnel from around the world as well as arms company representatives in London. He said technological advances had the power to change how the navy operated.

Didn't end well.

On the plus side the Restoration gave us Samuel Pepys Diary, Nell Gwynn, Drury Lane and army officers on active service in Tangier who dressed like this:

Fairborne_001_250.jpg

A detailed drawing of Major Palmes Fairbome aged 34 and wearing Full Dress. Made by the distinguished artist Wenceslaus Hollar during a visit to Tangier in 1669, and incorporated by him into a large watercolour in the Print Room of the British Museum.

Somebody notify the Military Heritage types.
