Accepted, not all Catholics are Republicans (for example) - but:

Both the RC and Prot populations in many parts of NI, particularly the 'hard' areas', are essentially fully militarized civilian support groups for various terrorist organizations that both prey upon them and claim to 'protect' them.

i.e., sucks to be them.

Dissident republican weapons cache uncovered in Armagh

PSNI finds terror arsenal including fully primed bomb and homemade rocket-launchers after two days of searches

Police in Northern Ireland have discovered a major dissident republican weapons cache including a fully primed bomb, homemade rocket-launchers and explosives.

The terror arsenal was discovered on Friday after two days of searches in north Armagh by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. A senior PSNI officer described the weaponry, which was found near a disused house on the outskirts of Lurgan, as “significant and key”.

The location is in a stronghold of the Continuity IRA – the oldest and more hardline of three main dissident republican factions opposed to the peace process and power-sharing in Northern Ireland. The arms and explosives haul also included homemade mortar launchers and a ready-to-go bomb.

British Navy Sees Delay In Delivery Of South Korean-Built Tanker
Andrew Chuter

The First Ship, the RFA Tidespring, Is Now Seven Months Late

London — The first of four fleet tankers being built in South Korea to support Royal Navy operations still has not been accepted by the British Ministry of Defence, seven months after it was due to be handed over.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker Tidespring was expected to be accepted off contract by the British in January this year with the expectation it would enter service in September. But the vessel, part of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) program, is still undergoing trials with builder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea.

It is unclear exactly what h(as triggered the delay in the handover of the tankers.

The MoD declined to answer questions about the delay in accepting the tanker or when the Tidespring would sail for the UK.

Exhausted, filthy but unbowed, the birth of the SAS

Exhausted and filthy, the soldiers of the newly-formed SAS stand side-by-side in the desert.
Hours earlier, an abortive raid had seen more than half their comrades either killed or captured, but the men of the soon-to-be-famous force still manage to raise a grin.

The newly-discovered photograph from 1941 is the only known picture of the elite unit’s first ever raid, carried out by founder members known as the Originals.

This extraordinary historical document has been discovered as part of research which has also determined the founding date of the secretive unit as August 28, 1941 - 75 years ago today.

My dad introduced me to a member of the LRDG in the Officers' Mess at Mewatta Armouries when I was a young man.  Even though this man was small in stature, he was a giant in deeds.

When I went to the Middle East in the 80s everyone was issued with a silk 'escape map', folded up into a tiny square you could easily fit in a cigarette case. It was a thing of cartographical beauty. It was about 5 ft square and covered most of North Africa as well as the 'Levant'. On it was a wealth of detail that, I was told, had been largely surveyed by the LRDG including various small air strips, oases/ water holes and tracks. Of course, I lost it.

Are you thinking of Roy Farran by any chance?  He was SAS but originally came from 3rd King's Own Hussars.  He also made a lot of enemies in Palestine after the war.

Yes, I believe that is the man.  The face and name seem familiar.  Also the time frame is correct as dad was still active with the army in Calgary in the 50's, so I am sure they would have crossed paths.  Dad knew a great many interesting chaps.  When we were watching The Great Escape, he was able to point to several of the names in the roll listed at the end of the film as men he knew.  He was also on a first name basis with a MND back then as well as they served together during the war.  He said that he used to giggle at seeing Generals literally scurry away in fright from dad because of this association.

Today's good news story:

SAS sniper hero 'killed an ISIS terror leader who was about to incinerate hostages with a flame thrower by shooting its fuel tank from 1,500m'

A top ISIS executioner was moments away from burning 12 hostages alive
The SAS marksman fired a single 50. round at the flame thrower's fuel tank
Bullet caused explosion which killed the feared ISIS leader and henchmen
Rescue operation took place in village near Raqqa, Syria earlier this month

One of my high school woodworking teachers was LRDG, although I did not find that out until it was too late.
