I think they are not just referring to this particular Guardsman or even just his battalion.

"Between July and October last year, 220 soldiers - including army reservists - tested positive after a compulsory drug test (CDT)."

BZ Royal Navy. Nice to see when a plan comes together. Wish we had some F35s but we'll be getting some used F18s from Australia just as soon as we can get the poisonous spiders and snakes out of them. Thanks Harjit. ;D

Sandhurst chief says army needs character not university degrees

The British Army is filled with graduates, the Sandhurst chief has said, as he reveals plans to entice school-leavers by offering them a university degree alongside their officer training.

General Paul Nanson, Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, said that 18-year-old feel that they should go to university because it is the “done” thing, and often have not considered alternative options.

He said that when he was at Sandhurst, it was evenly split between university graduates and school-leavers, but now the vast majority - around four fifths - of Officer Cadets arrive with a degree.

“You want to try and get youngsters in early and develop them yourself rather than [choosing from] an ever increasing pond of graduates,” said General Nanson, who was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for distinguished services in Afghanistan.
“There are a number of people with very good degrees out there – but what you are looking for is character. That is one thing the army develops very well. There is a feeling now that people are going to university because it is the ‘done’ thing.”

General Nanson revealed that from this September, school-leavers who have been accepted for officer training at Sandhurst will be able to register for a BSc in Leadership and Strategic Studies. Once they have completed the undergraduate degree,  developed in partnership with the University of Reading, they can go on to complete a Masters.

Officers will build up credits during their 12-month officer training course at Sandhurst, which will make up a third of the degree. They can complete the remaining two thirds over a four year period while they are a serving officer.

General Nanson, who joined the army straight from school and rose through the ranks, said that the new programme is aimed at “the youngster who says I always wanted to join the army but I felt the pressure to get a degree”.

He said: “We are trying to tap into another pool of talent. We need to get back into schools and get the message out. We need to get back into sixth forms to let people know that there are alternatives.

“Very few [Officer Cadets] over the last few years have been school leavers – about 15 per cent. In my day it was almost 50/50.”
General Nanson said that there is “no doubt” that degrees are viewed by 18-year-old as prestigious, but added that there is a “movement” towards employers offering higher education opportunities to their employees.

“It has a lot to do with the fact that university is very expensive,” he said.  “We have done some research – a lot of school leavers want to go to university. But over half said they would skip it if they knew they could get the same job and salary.”
John Wills, head of custom programmes at Henley Business School, University of Reading, said that he has have been working with Sandhurst over the past twelve months to develop a bespoke course for officers.

“The majority of the course will be distance learning – meetings with tutors remotely, and using webinars or skype calls,” he said. “They can access also access resources remotely, they will have access to the university library”.
He said there would only be one or two exams, and the majority of the assessment would be written work.

COLONEL TIM COLLINS: How can our chubby, drug-addled and right-on Army protect us from our enemies?

Instead of imposing stricter discipline, it has put 96 soldiers on diet pills, while eight have been given liposuction. This lame official response tells you all you need to know: the British Army has been infected with the crippling disease of political correctness.

Armed Forces open door to foreign recruits who have never lived in Britain

Foreign nationals will be allowed to join the Armed Forces without having ever lived in Britain, ministers will announce on Monday, in a major move to address a deepening recruitment crisis.

The Ministry of Defence will drop a requirement for applicants from Commonwealth countries to have resided in Britain for five years, The Telegraph has learned.

Military leaders now hope to recruit 1,350 extra personnel from foreign countries every year to the navy, army and air force.

So why didn't they just buy HK weapons?

UK Award Heckler & Koch $95 million Contract For SA80 Rifle Upgrade

Last month it was reported by In Front, the British Army’s new bi-annual newsletter, that a ‘business case’ was being put together “that will allow further procurement of 10K weapons over the next 2-3 years”. It seems that this ‘business case’ has been expanded from 10,000 to 44,000. It has not been confirmed how long the delivery period will be but if the Army maintains 5,000 per year then the upgrade of 44,000 would take nearly 9 years. It seems likely that a larger number, perhaps 10,000 will be upgraded per year, shortening the programme length.

Paras drop into ITV for landmark series on elite regiment

ITV will show a brand-new landmark documentary series on the Parachute Regiment in 2019 after its doors were opened to a UK network broadcaster’s cameras for the first time since the early 1980s.

For The Paras: Men Of War [WT], producers Avanti Media, commissioned by ITV, were granted unprecedented access to the elite regiment and spent 12 months filming all aspects of this closed world which turns raw recruits into elite soldiers trained to kill.

Across the 3x60 series, viewers will see young men, many still in their late teenage years, pushed to the extremes of their endurance and learn vital skills - as they give their all to pass through the highly pressurised and often brutally demanding recruitment stage and be accepted into the regiment.

Only a few of those who join up will make it to the end.

The Paras: Men Of War [WT] will offer a unique perspective and unflinching account of what it takes to make the grade, as well as providing an intimate insight into the characters of the young men and the officers charged with transforming them into battle ready paratroopers, who are the first in to any conflict.

Throughout the series they talk openly about their experiences both in training and in combat - and reflect on the challenges they face, providing an often disarming and enlightening view into the mindset of the soldiers and the reality of the unique culture of the Paras.

And the series will follow the recruits who make it into the regiment, filming them up close and personal on their first major assignments as they prepare for new military threats.

The Paras: Men Of War [WT] is commissioned for ITV by Tom Giles, Controller of Current Affairs and produced by Neil Grant [Executive Producer] and Nick Betts [Series Producer/Director] for Avanti.

Tom said:

“At a moment when the armed forces are under more scrutiny than ever, this new series presents a unique opportunity to see inside the world of the Parachute Regiment, which is usually firmly closed to outsiders, and get a powerful understanding of the people and culture within an elite, sometimes controversial, regiment that we all know of, but about which we have little real inside knowledge.”

Neil Grant, Executive Producer said:

“This is no ordinary and predictable army access documentary. This is raw, honest and revealing - sugar coated it isn’t.  Uniquely this series goes inside the Para mindset of what it takes to succeed and the personal consequences of failing to make the grade. It’s an intimate portrait of loyalty and honour, of the kill or be killed mindset and being a member of the Regiment entitled to wear the coveted maroon beret.”

Nick Betts, Series Producer / Director said:

“The Paras are trained killers who’ve courted secrecy, controversy and admiration in equal measure, and who largely view all ‘media’ with extreme caution. The dialogue with the Regiment involved a long period of just listening, without filming - but then slowly the real men behind their identities as soldiers emerged. The ambition of the series was to show the raw, often brutal truth of why young men from all backgrounds desire to become Paratroopers. And in order to do this they must strip away the person they are, to become capable of killing.”

In today's gun-free zone that is the United Kingdom I can't help but wonder how much training the youngsters with knives have before they venture out onto the streets.  Or perhaps they are just a pool of raw talent that with care and attention to detail can have their aggressive natures channeled and focused.

Clearly BS. After 24 weeks at Depot PARA any survivors would kill anyone to get out of there and into Battalion out of sheer frustration. The only ‘stripping’ done is mainly related to removing acres of baby fat... and hope :)

Fall in, you ’orrible little snowflakes! British Army's new recruitment drive targets 'me me me millennials, phone zombies and selfie addicts' in bid to make up falling soldier numbers

• New poster campaign appeals to computer game geeks and selfie addicts
• The campaign is said to have cost the Army around £1.5million to put together
• The aim is to sign up millennials with compassion, self belief and focus

It's in the Daily Mail so it has to be true, but the person that came up with this is a genius. Anyone who can milk 1.5 million pounds out of the government for this cr@p has to be a genius. The person who authorized the campaign on the other hand . . . well he probably has to be a brigadier.
