Methinks the Falklands will get a boost in defense capabilities soon, if they haven't already ...

FID secured for Sea Lion field offshore Falklands, first oil targeted 2028

(WO) - Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Ltd. (NPDP), a subsidiary of Navitas Petroleum, together with partner Rockhopper Exploration plc, has taken a final investment decision (FID) on the Sea Lion oilfield development, clearing the way for the first producing project offshore the Falkland Islands.

The Sea Lion field is located about 220 km north of the Falkland Islands and contains an estimated 319 million barrels of certified oil resources. Phase 1 of the development is designed to deliver peak production of approximately 50,000 bpd, with first oil targeted for the first half of 2028.

Under the approved development plan, Phase 1 will comprise the drilling of 11 subsea wells tied back to a redeployed floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. A second phase, expected within three years of first oil, would add an additional 12 wells, expanding plateau production and extending field life.

NPDP plans to open an Aberdeen office in early 2026 to support delivery of the project, complementing existing teams in London and Stanley. Project execution will follow UK and international regulatory and operational standards, drawing on experience from previous exploration and appraisal activity in the basin.

“The UK and Falkland Islands’ supply chain has already successfully delivered 29 exploration and appraisal wells in the region,” said Ian Ramsay, chief operating officer of NPDP. “The development will be progressed to industry and regulatory standards and create jobs both in the UK and the Falklands.”

  • Base of Operations: It operates primarily out of East Cove Military Port, located near the Mount Pleasant Complex on East Falkland.
  • Rotation History: This is HMS Medway's second stint in the region; it previously served a nine-month temporary rotation in 2023 while HMS Forth underwent a refit in Gibralta

Seems there really might be something up with Argentina, the US and the Falklands.
.
Well, if the US wants to "review its position on “imperial possessions,” including the U.K.’s possession of the Falklands near Argentina." then maybe they should ensure that Diego Garcia is given back to France as the original settlers of Mauritius and the Chagos Islands

Personally I think they should give back Hawaii if thats their stance. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Argentina is funnelling money to Trump and his cronies. Same type situation as Hungary, very odd stance for the US to take but they have been strengthening ties with right wing governments for a bit.

What is special about HI that the US should "give back" HI and yet keep the rest of the US?

No need for tin-hatting it. Milei has good relations with the US. That currency swap a short while backed was a win for both of them.

Considering Hawaii had it's own internationally recognized government (including by the US) and was a completely sovereign nation with clearly defined borders and was only annexed in 1898 (with the coup leading up to it considered illegal even by the US president of the era), it is a excellent candidate for being returned to it's own country status.

My main point is if the US considers the Falklands not British, what right does it have to much of it's territory?

My questioning is anyone who has good relations with the US, why is that so. Clearly he doesn't favour long term allies, which makes me wonder why he favours others. Usually there is some sort of financial tie in there.

Sometimes just because they haven't insulted him personally yet [add: and, if you prefer, haven't been bullied enough by him to have to stuff it back in his face - which is his fault, but he doesn't like that either].

Ahem, about those 13 colonies ;)

Re the Monroe Doctrine

Everyone of those other lands outside of, and including, those rebels, originally held to be owned by someone else.

He can keep the continental lands. I would be happy reclaiming the islands. We could start with the ones Churchill was forced to hand over in 1940 for some decrepit four stack steamers of WW1 vintage.

PS

Britain and France guaranteed the independence and sovereignty in 1843.

That guarantee was still in effect in 1893 when the planters staged their coup.

Can we do Northern Ireland at the same time ?

That was Paul McCartneys only good song.
