This kind of fits into the discussion about multiple drone suppliers but only one vehicle supplier.

Building without permission. But also building without a manual. Building without a rule book.
Free form thinking.

Being forced to strip things back to first principles when the rule book no longer applies.

There always has to be a bit of room for mutations. Even if 98% of your needs are met off one production line, shouldn't there somebody doing the other thing? Just in case there is a better idea, or the situation changes and you need to pivot in a hurry.

You can't write a spec for that.

Inclination.

Time and money to waste.
A space to waste it in.
An inclination to waste it.

Results in a chance to be pleasantly surprised.

There are no rules for building follies out of glass bottles.
There is nothing to prevent you from taking shelter within your folly.
And, if someone else is quirked enough by your folly that they want to buy it, there is nothing to prevent them assuming all liabilities and purchasing it.

Do you live in a place that enforces a building code? If yes, then no. Do you operate your homemade toy on public roads? If yes, then no.

interestingly ive seen both sides of this recently helping my kid out.
Buildings in non organized municipalities built without a permit both well and absolutely frighteningly bad
but also buildings built to the drawings, correctly and approved that often require much remedial work

If I secure land where building codes do not apply - in the sense of being allowed to construct follies - then I can play to my heart's content.
So then, yes.

If I secure land where the rules of the road do not apply then I can move myself across that land in whatever bunny powered go-kart i wish to concoct as I will. So then,yes.

As long as my fist doesn't reach as far as your nose and put it out of joint then I am at liberty to indulge myself.

It is possible to keep on doing the same old thing in the same old way - until you can't. And then you are looking for the other thing, And the other thing is found in those spaces where follies are built.
