I am going to join the army in 2 years and I was wondering. Which weapon is better the C7 or the C9. Do you get to choose C7 or C9 or do they just give you one?

Also, who gets a sidearm? anybody who wants one, or again do they just give it to you?

Thankyou.

It‘s personal preference on what you like better. NO, you do not get to choose. Your troop leader or section commander will select a weapon for you for various reasons. Do not expect to have many choices. :soldier:

NO ONE gets a side arm. Maybe some high ranking officers do, or an RSM. Both of these questions were answered on earlier posts.

Two of many posts that will help you......if only you had searched :)

Now Recce tech....I‘m not a high ranking person or a general, yet I have been issued a pistol. Truth is you don‘t know the subject very well or else you would have known that Sect comds/2IC‘s often get pistols, as do Plt comds, C6 crew, snipers and many others...not to mention the navy‘s boarding teams. Stick to what you know and you won‘t go wrong.

When I was RCD I often got issued a pistol with my C8, not often but we did have them.

Recce_Tech: What are some of those various reasons? Size? Experience?

I‘m a section commander. I asked people in my section who wanted to carry the C9. Whoever said they didn‘t. I gave it to them. Just kiddin. Its more like this. You give the new guys the Nines so they gain experience with an important role in a section. It helps them develop as a soldier. So the next year when the NEW new guys come along, the soldiers that carried it the year before can help them properly emoploy it. It helps develop the first steps in leadership. :fifty

It will all depend - overseas you will likely give the 9gun to more experience members of your section - while in Canada when not prepping for deployment the new guys get it

almost nothing in the army is left to personal choice. weapons, kit, posting choices: these are all out of your hands. you can ask but will almost never recieve.
remember, nothing is one size fits all. a rifle is not a machine gun is not a grenade is not an artillery round. all have their uses. listen to those who know better (use your sh$t detector to decide who does know better) and then follow their advice.

oh, yeah, the kit you get will always be the wrong choice for your situation: wear mukluks and their will be a thaw, forget them and the blizzard of the century will descend on your a$$. same with weapons.

I was designated one of the two M203 grenadiers in my infantry section, only because I was one of the few pers who qualified on that weapon this past summer.

You are assigned your weapon depending on a range of factors, and according to a highly scientific method involving many variables and calculations, but which will somewhat come down to: 1. Is the person qualified on that weapon?

On course it may be different. A clerk in my SQ platoon got the C9 because she will never see one again in her military career. I ended up with a C9, but was such an MIR commando half the time that it usually got passed off to someone else (for example during section attacks). I won the C9 by doing the most chin-ups, and gimped myself doing the push ups!

Pistols -- never saw any, but I am told the C6 gunners usually get them.

Actually you‘ll get carry pretty much everything over the course of your military career. At the junior ranks level you won‘t see a pistol much unless you get tasked with a role that requires it, SDR, shooting team, etc.

You may be aloud to carry a personal pistol if you go and get it autorized by your CO.

You won‘t be allowed to carry a personal arm of any type, during peacetime. It is against all the rules and any CO who authourizes it is putting himself in dire jeopardy. There are many instances during full blown war time of guys carrying whatever they picked up, traded for, etc, but that is not what we‘re talking about here. There was also a time, during WW1, when officer‘s were more than likely citizen soldiers and many parts of their kit, including side arms, were self purchased along with their commissions. This is no longer the case. You‘ll get issued what they deem you need for your job. Not your choice. BTW, many of us are wearing issue pistols in Afghanistan. From Pte up, depending on your job and circumstances. That‘s it, you get what you get, including your job. Not your choice, and no sense wondering or worrying about it. Take it as it comes and be happy :)

Sorry, I wasn‘t talking about peacetime, I didn‘t mention that sorry. I was told during a full out war to "have at‘er" with any weapon, and that if you go on operation you can get an authorised weapon, however unlikely. I guess this would be form years back however, I‘m not sure. :S

Just a side note: the first time me and a few people was taught how to handle that weapon, the CPL holds the C9 with one hand on the handle like a pistol. And then when we tried to one hand it we were like WTF? :D

Want to shoot pistol...volunteer for the pistol team.

Hey, I don‘t care what I have in my hands. If I was in combat, as long as my weapon puts rounds down range, and keeps putting rounds down range.

Well good, then you can have a flintlock musket.

Infanteer

I take you saw that news article that all Infantry Bns are being re issued with the Brown Bess musket from the war stocks in the name of improvement and efficiency then. :D

To answer the original question, the c9‘s in an infantry section account for I believe 60% of fire. So obviously the c9 is more effective. Personally I like the c7, aimed shots and all, however letting lose with a c9 is awsome. In my experience i‘ve only seen hire-ups and officers with pistols.
