It exists because people at the top don't think it's important enough to fix. It's the same reason base housing has been allowed to become a shitshow....

Leadership allowed services to decline because 20 years ago times were better, and and members were seeking commercial options for daycare and housing. As conditions changed, the people at the top didn't notice because they were established, and making enough money to not have the same problems as the newer troops. They brushed-off concerns as just people whining, and now we have people couch surfing, living in garages, or just leaving because we didn't fix known problems before they hit the news.

It surprises me these issues are even issues at this point.

I mean the base locations aren't new, and how many personnel are assigned to units at that base is pretty well known. The 'base resident' population tends to be pretty stable, regardless of any units/aircraft passing thru.

Example - CFB Edmonton has approximately X number of people posted to it so it requires Y number of confirmed daycare slots.


You'd think someone, somewhere along the way would be enterpreneurial enough to set up a daycare or a series of daycares close to the base, or the government could have somehow arranged for the opening of nearby daycares...



The requirement for child care services on or nearby any Canadian military base is pretty stable.

in a word: privatization. Trenton opened the facility up to civilian personnel and its hours are such that anyone with early hours had to go elsewhere (at least our family's experience from 5 years ago). I suspect that other facilities suffer from the same problems. The spaces are there but not reserved.

define early hours? a lot of child care places here are open starting at 0600 with the last child leaving around 1800. since majority of bases are not near urban centers that would have a lot of child care facilities, this is where we should be having a facilities, possibly connected to the MFRC on each base for Mil families to utilize. Also would need buy in from leadership to properly attend to member needs if duty requires staying late "Hey Cpl Bloggins, next thursday ill need you to stay late, can you arrange for someone to pick and watch your kid from base day care?"

An opportunity to hire spouses and teenagers who live on base to help provide the daycare service for other CAF members. But they will make it so difficult and unrealistic that few people will bother.
