im really curious about that air defense bit, cause it aint the GBAD project, is this simulators of some kind or other training infrastructure for GBAD?

For whatever reason (and I'm not complaining) the guy thinks defence is important and sees it as an actual economic driver. None of his predecessors have thought that way. And I'm not sure his successor will either.

I'd count myself as one of those generally approving of where Carney appears to be heading (time will tell what comes of it) but I have my doubts that he would be so hawkish on defence were there not the pressure of Trump's policies.

The tariffs, talk of ending/changing CUSMA, America first trade policies, talk of annexation, etc. in addition to the general global instability that Trump has created drives a lot of the sovereignty-focused policies being pursued by PMMC.

Never understood why the previous JT government did not see that rebuilding base infrastructure would count to the defense spending our allies wanted and yet also appease the peaceniks in his party that he is not buying "bad stuff" and providing jobs and many feel good announcements.

I think it honestly just comes down to Carney being a actual serious politician who understands that sovereignty isn’t free and if you can’t defend yourself you exist solely based on the good will of others.

I get the skepticism. Honestly. But from where I sit, this doesn't look like, "What's the minimum we can do to get the US off our backs." This looks a lot more like, "What is the most we can get out of our dollars (in multiple ways)?". He really could have been far more stingy if he wanted. Especially looking at some of the plans that are further out. I honestly think he believes this is beneficial to the economy.

I get the skepticism. Honestly. But from where I sit, this doesn't look like, "What's the minimum we can do to get the US off our backs." This looks a lot more like, "What is the most we can get out of our dollars (in multiple ways)?". He really could have been far less stingy if he wanted. Especially looking at some of the plans that are further out. I honestly think he believes this is beneficial to the economy.

He is far better than JT was, but don't forget for one minute that he is also a part of a party that happily ran JT until it began to hurt the party, only then did they get rid of him. The same party and the powers behind the party is there. At the end of the day he is reacting to events outside of Canada, both potentiel threats from possible adversaries and from allies.

Ottawa itself is full of broken buildings. Go to Coventry or former NDMC. We also don't have the facilities we need. The Space Wing doesn't have a proper ops centre. We'll be taking delivery of satellites and having people work on laptops like college students. There's no proper secure ops centre where CJOC, CFINTCOM, SOF, etc can do 24/7/365 joint and combined ops. Etc. Instead there's like half a dozen different ops rooms just for the CAF scattered throughout the NCR with varying clearances, IT, etc. It's utter crap to actually plan and enable ops.

Till now some of these gaps were not even being put on the books. Because they'll be so far down anyway. But there's finally been some actual traction on these. Like Space might move out of Coventry.... In a decade.

By the way, Carling itself? Also has deficiencies. Security and parking are two very obvious ones.

There's obviously an element of reacting to the news. But also you look at how he approaches things. And a little bit of "personnel is policy" and you'll get an idea. Not an accident that the head of the new DIA is a banker who is tight with the PM. Zero defence experience. Just came in and starts pencil whipping billions through. I think the economic aspect of this is much more important than a lot of people think. And if there's a risk I think it comes from the economic returns not materializing.

Could be my bias. But on my own project I see the emphasis change. And it's not typical ITBs. They want to see the spending drive some kind of gain in skill and technological development in the country. I think this might become more obvious over time as more and more spending goes through.

Oh, I agree that he's serious about getting things done with the economy. I just think that with a different leader in the US and a different geopolitical situation his priorities would have likely shifted with less weight on the military side of the scale.

But can't that be said with Germany in 1938? Or any other situation?

If Gorbachev came 10yrs later and the 'Wall' didn't fall until 1999, there would have been a fairly good chance that Mulroney might have been able to push through nuclear submarines for Canada and by Nov of '99 we could have a 1 or 2 in the water and another 1 or 2 being built.

By all means Carney is more committed to defense and to shoring up the global world order than JT ever was. I suspect Carney has forgotten more than JT ever knew. But I suspect we would see similar movements if we had someone like Harper in as PM. Both strike me as somewhat similar and would likely both make the same moves.

A person who worked with Carney has noted that for most of his adult life, Carney has had a strong interest in military history and has admired the power of military strength. Not of equipment and organization, but of the effects of history - and in particular he’s apparently virtually indistinguishable from Niall Ferguson.
So here we have a PM who supports the military for his own legacy, understands the consequences and lessons of history and in particular history gone wrong when a military cannot perform, and actually has decided what is militarily important and what is not.

I would note just prior to the last election, during a BBC interview he was greatly irritated by the UK interviewer referring to the Canadian military being small and ineffective.
I personally think that’s why he over exaggerates things (today for example - “we have 42 ice breakers” - which is a stretch) and has made a point of having the military and defence industry get cracking now … like right now.

It was and is a source of personal and political embarrassment to him - as it should have been to all PM’s - that the military has been crippled in Canada. He’s going to try and fix that, thank goodness. If that’s his mission and best enduring legacy, he will have done this country well.
