Doesn't sound like the worst idea to me.

Mail and Roads were the original comms network - and under the supervision of the Crown, its original customer.

One of the constants of the Canadian Militia and the Canadian Army has been the Canadian Postal Corps clerk - the original comms.

Because Canada Post is such a high performing, high tech enabled regulatory organization in the digital space... right? ;)

Yeah. Like leave it to private industry. I've just become a new Roger's cell customer. My first customer experience after 10 minutes of being bounced back and forth between different (or maybe the same) AI Bots was, "We're too busy now. Call back some other time. Click."

It may be too late for Canada Post to get back into the game - even if the money was there.

Sadly I think it is. I worked there as a consultant and employee for six years in the late 90s and early oughts and it was clear then that the window was closing on doing anything to save it like privatization while it still had some enterprise value. Now that it's back on government life support, the very thing creating the crown corporation was supposed to end (and to be fair it did for 30-40 years), that ship has sailed.

I say that though, but the reality is there were/are just too many vested interests working against change, not the least of which of course are the unreconstructed Marxists at CUPW. But they're not alone. MPs will always fight tooth and nail to keep their local corporate post offices open, especially if they're Liberals or Tories in QC where the post office may be the only place you'll see a Canadian flag flying. And the shareholder, AKA Treasury Board, was preternaturally risk averse when it came to further commercialization.

Folks have floated a variety of ideas over the years for keeping it afloat, usually getting into the banking business, but the reality is nothing can replace the lost revenue from the accelerating decline in their core business. I have a community mailbox. I stop by maybe once every two weeks to transfer 90% of the contents to the black bin in my garage. And even the remaining 10% I could live without. All my bills arrive in my email inbox. I can't even begin to imagine the idle hands and equipment in those massive processing plants in Mississauga and the West Island.
