Years ago I saw a Mike Loade video where he postulated that the way the ancient chariotse were used was not in a head on charge but as a stream of chariots running across the enemy's front while the archers poured in arrows like machine guns. When they ran out of arrows or targets they galloped off the line and returned to the rear to rearm and reset for another run.
In the 16th century, with the invention of the wheel lock pistol the cavalry re-invented the tactic as the caracole.
