They produce SAF(Stabilized Aluminum Foam), which is becoming to be known as a reliable blast mitigator.   www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/February2009/02/c4824.html

It is also interesting that Major-General(Ret.) Lewis Mackenzie joined this company on the Board of Directors .(as someone posted on Jan. 26)

Aluminum foam is also suggested to be an effective road-side crash absorber, especially along high-speed routes like the major 400 series highways in Ontario.  I understand that the price to pay for many of the advantages of aluminum foam is that it is bulky  ... doesn't mean that I would reject it as an armour possibility, but I'd be curious to see how it is made to work.

I do worry about incendiary metals being used as armour though  .... but it has been done before.

I guess we will wait and see how this goes.  Best of luck to Cymat Technologies Ltd.  If it all works out, we can benefit in the long run.

Do not work for them. Simply googled Cymat and previous news post from this site came up Re: Major-General Mackenzie, as with other public news. Seems like a good Canadian story if it saves Canadian lives.  More interested in pros and cons and practicality.

I think GDawg was reffering to the original poster with that one.

Ummm....troopsupporter is the original poster.  ;)

oops, riiight, was a little tired when I read it, don't see someone make the first reply to their own post very often. Most just edit.

Geez, I've really got off on the wrong foot here. I apologize if I sounded like a cheerleader with my initial post. This is a potential step by the DND to diminish the thread of IEDs to troops. My second post was to just put some context to my first post, so it did'nt seem from left field. I would never knowingly disrespect this forum, I am only a civilian with a sticker on my car worried about good Canadian people.  My sincerest apologies to anyone offended.

Not offended at all, and don't mean to scare you off.  We've just had a number of people do drive by postings, who leave behind enough information in their profiles to suggest that they're actually part of an organized PR campaign (C-27 folks, this means you!)

As stated, aluminum foam is bulky and, at high temperatures, flammable.  It may be possible to use it as part of a system of protective elements, though - that's why we have Defence R&D folks, to try out things like this.  Thank you for brining it to our attention - I enjoy reading and learning about new things.
