CDN/US Covid-related political discussion

And in the “we the Government know better than John and Jean Q. Public, so we’ll protect you from pesky details” department:

Senior Liberal staffers discussed withholding details about COVID-19 response: Internal emails (Goibal News, 6 Feb)
Senior political staffers from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office and the office of another federal Liberal cabinet minister privately discussed how to withhold information from Canadians about the government’s response to the COVID-19 crisis last June, newly released emails show.

The correspondence details part of what was going on behind the scenes as Liberal staffers prepared for announcements and anticipated public scrutiny and criticism. It also suggests that the government was concerned about its ability to procure desperately needed supplies and wanted to ensure as much flexibility as possible.

In one email exchange, a senior staffer from the Prime Minister’s Office said the government could be held accountable for announcements about billions of dollars in public spending if it provided too many details.

“Would say that there are several factors that we may want to consider with respect to the level of detail for the announcement,” wrote a senior policy director for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an email sent on June 4 to a Trudeau speechwriter.

“A detailed announcement [would] mean that the government could be held accountable to show that funds were spent exactly as announced (reducing flexibility to move money across buckets if necessary).”

Liberal government refuses to let Canadians see the details of the contracts they're making with vaccine companies.

Provinces say they're going to secure their own vaccine, liberal government says they're free to do so.

Vaccine companies refuse to deal with the provinces citing the deals they made with the federal government.

Makes sense why the Liberal Party doesn't want Canadians reading those contracts now.

These vaccines need to be delivered soon, hopefully progress will be made with the drastically increased shipments expected in the coming weeks.

A LOT of people are still unemployed, despite looking for work almost anywhere. But with lockdowns still happening, a lot of industries just aren’t hiring at all.

If they don’t distribute vaccines and get progress on this soon... we will have a country of extremely high unemployment, and no CRB to assist. (Good luck filling the coffers when nobody is working or spending)

The UK was able to vaccinate 15 million in 6 weeks, that's half of the Canadian population.

Allowing extra time for distribution for our larger country and for delivery from manufacturers,
we should have been able to reach a far higher percentage of Canadians.

The Washington Post seems pretty insightful :)

Opinion: Canada is failing on vaccines — and the responsibility lies with Justin Trudeau

A consistent theme of the Justin Trudeau years has been wild swings in the Canadian prime minister’s public reputation. One moment he’s the world’s “woke boyfriend,” glamorized in literal pinup calendars, the next he’s getting busted for repeatedly wearing blackface. On Monday, he’s celebrated as a paragon of clean and ethical government in contrast to Donald Trump’s Washington; on Tuesday, his political opponents are running ads implying his ethics scandals are actually worse than the former president’s.

And now we find ourselves rattled by yet another breakneck twist in the Trudeau joyride: An administration once celebrated as a global model for handling covid-19 now finds itself on the receiving end of growing global pity, as it becomes an example of a nation getting vaccines very wrong indeed.

To be fair, Canada’s reputation on covid-19 was always quite inflated and stereotype-driven. When compliments were reaching their peak last summer, the country could at best be said to be handling the pandemic at about a C+ level, certainly nowhere near as impressively as places like Finland or Denmark — to say nothing of Taiwan or New Zealand. Since then, Canada has seen an autumn of sharp increases in both infections and deaths, and recent reporting has highlighted the degree that, for all the praise Trudeau received as a paragon of clear instruction to his naturally rule-following subjects, plenty of Canadians are still refusing to follow social distancing orders.

He said he closed the borders when in reality, they weren’t particularly closed. Hundreds of flights have been landing here weekly since we “closed our borders”.

And an average of 208,000 people have been crossing the border into Canada each month. (I realize that some of those will be truck drivers. But curious as to how the rest of the numbers break down.)

Why are the Nigerian, South African, and UK variants of Covid here if our borders were shut down? Well, they weren’t. And nobody was swimming across the Atlantic & sneaking in, either.

^^ This is just one example of how if they had actually just done what they said they had done, it would have simplified our situation a lot.

Our politicians are mediocre, at best. Planning and executing simple tasks seems far harder than it should be... 0.02

So he rates pretty high on the 'attractive younger man who is woke & stuff' scale....but fails when it comes to the 'actually getting anything done' scale?

Seems pretty accurate.

The Washington Post? . . . or the Vancouverite who submitted the column to its "opinion" section. J.J. McCullough describes himself as a writer, artist, political commentator and YouTuber living in Vancouver, British Columbia.
But do you have concerns about the content of the article? Is it factual? If so, then why does the source matter?

To avoid controversy, perhaps the debate could be if, "The opinion of J.J. McCullough seems pretty insightful." :)

The content is fine. But this source has be lambasted by many here for being fake news. Or any other MSM for that matter.

I happen to agree with author. And I have no issues with The source

On the bright side, once the rest of the world is vaccinated, there'll be plenty of it laying around for us! Modelled after the Soviet practice of only arming the first two ranks at Stalingrad.

wasn't that a urban legend?

Really?? So now you're Ok with Canada being so inept that you think foreign companies/Govts. bailing us out is cool??
I think the first quarter was always going to be a gong show while things ramped up.

Once things ramp up and doses start coming in on a regular schedule, and we start getting millions of doses a month, nobody is going to remember the slow start.

The PM said every Canadian who wants a vaccine can get it by September. If that remains the case, people aren't going to care how we got there, just that we did.
