Choosing and Switching bases?

I'm currently not in Canada, so I cannot call up or visit a recruitment center. So 2 questions:

- Do you get to choose your base?
- Can you change bases and move? Like for example, if I picked CFB Kingston, would it be possible to go to CFB Edmonton?
Thank you.

You can say which unit/base you'd like to be posted too, but that doesn't mean you will get it.

Yes, you can move from one base to another on a posting.

Do you get a chance to pick? Or is it automatically chosen for you? How does the process go?

You inform your career manager where you would like to go.  The career manager then combines your requests with those of everyone else and meets the CAF's needs and tries to meet your requests and those of others as well.

You say your not in country and are unable to visit or call a recruiting center. I suggest visiting the website and if you want contact a recruiter by e-mail.

If you do some reading you can learn how the process works as many of your questions have probably been asked.

One particular difference: if you're RegF Combat Arms, you inform your CO who (along wit the RSM for NCMs) sorts it out with the career shop for your particular Corps. You can express your wishes, and the "system" will give them due consideration, but in the end you'll go where you're needed most. Don't sign up with false expectations.

Don't forget to add, it's also dependent on what trade you are.  Some trades can be posted to a variety of locations, others will be very limited in where they may end up.

Agree with everyone else. You put in some choices (3, usually). If you're lucky, you'll get posted to one of the 3, but the needs of the CAF will come first. You "switch" bases when you're posted out, which occurs for career and manning reasons, not because you prefer a different base. Again, you'll have your input with your choices, and if your choices and the CAF's needs align, you might end up where you want to go.

Occasionally something odd happens, like a newly trained X from the west coast who wants to stay local gets sent to the east coast, while an identical newly trained x from the east coast who also wants to stay local gets sent to the west coast, and you scratch your head at why the system did this. But, eh.
