Civilian courses funded through navy

Hi there, first post here, I have asked around the ship and browsed this forum+DIN and cannot seem to come across a satisfactory answer to my question. Essentially I have come across a martial art instructor qualification(Specifically in Krav Maga) that in my opinion would provide a positive service onboard for close quarters combat techniques and general improvement of physical fitness. I understand that this obviously isn't of critical importance in an operational sense however there has been a driving focus onboard lately for higher physical activity and it my belief that qualifications in something like this would only aid in  providing a service onboard to encourage this. I have attended many courses that the navy and military has to offer, however I cannot seem to come across anything that compares to this to be frank. I guess my question is, does anyone know of any references or precedents where situations where individuals have received funding to attend certified civilian courses(outside of the obvious tuition reimbursement as I am under the impression this doesn't qualify)?

Well hopefully someone has some light they can shed on this for me.
Cheers!

Hello, one of my coworkers was also interested in something similar a couple years ago but i think he just gave up and paid out of his own pocket..  Depending on your rank and level of training you can always join the NBP team on your ship and do some team training up at the school, the instructors up there are very knowledgeable and some of them have extra close quarter training with some army units.
You can also write a memo, listing all the reasons you wrote on here, the worst thing that can happen is that they say no.

You didn't fill in enough info on your profile for me to give you a specific name to contact but you could start by discussing with your CoC and make an appointment with someone at the PSO Office. The prereqs for education reimbursement are:
1. Career/occupation related.
2. Should lead to credentials, a certification or a licence
3. Second language training (subject to TB approval).

You should fall under the second one which further says that if in the best interest of the CF (this is admittedly arguable though in this case), it applies. The worse that will happen is you will be told no, this is on your own dime. I have heard a few surprises in the area of reimbursement but with the recent 'tightning' of the departmental fiscal belt, this may preclude you getting anything.
It never hurts to ask.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out for sure.
BTW, if you are in Halifax, PM me and I can give you a name and phone number.

I suspect that you already have your answer.  Although martial arts will be beneficial from a physical fitness standpoint, the response you receive will likely be that there are already CF facilities and programs that you can access.  All you can do is ask, though.

There's a DND course called Close Quarter Combat Instructor, I doubt you're going to get a civvie course that costs money when they can get you loaded on a military course for the cost of TD for 6(?) weeks.

Actually, you may be on to something there. TD, and R&Q (in Halifax anyway) is almost $5K a month (I don't make the rates, I just know this from a course running with a couple guys here from Esquimalt). To save the cost of a TD out of the area, this may be the way to go???

Again, recommend a visit to the PSO.

It is actually meals and incidentals that constitutes the bulk of this cost.
