For an infantry officer,

Does combat/affections overseas affect your pay?

Like if you volunteer for a peacekeeping mission, do you get some extra pay/tax deductions?

And do combat penalize or helps promotion?

Thanks.

All members going overseas for tours get extra pay. Each month overseas counts as so many points. Total of points determines what level of certain overseas pay you get. If you spent 8 yrs in Germany you get equal to 16 tours overseas with regards to pay. Much of not all of this pay is tax free.

Combat when done correctly should give skills required for next promotion. When not done correctly then you don‘t have to worry about anything.

Canadian Tax law stipulates that military deployment benefits are tax free. Thus any money you make over there is tax free. You still pay taxes on your salary, as Canada much like other countries considers ‘global income‘ when determining your tax return.

Wrong!!

In the U.K.,if your overseas more than 6 month‘s your income is tax free.
In the State‘s I believe they have a similiar system.
Only we get screwd!

Ref pay, not wrong...
All the foriegn service allowance and Hazard pay earned while deployed overseas is considered a tax free allowance. While you are gone you are only taxed and pay taxes on what your regular Candian pay would be.

Reference combat and promotions, I am of the opinion that we have not been in ‘combat‘ enough in the last 25 yrs or so for anyone to really answer that, but as for foriegn deployments, how well you do would definately affect the career progression. If you do well or poorly, has a definative effect as merit boards weigh tour PERs higher then regular ones.

Army Medic I said "TAXABLE INCOME" not the bonus‘s we get over seas.
All our bonus‘s are tax free but our "INCOME" is Taxed!.

But it is great when handed a cheque for $6,000 or so when going home aint it? :D

Gents, why should our salaries be tax exempt while serving overseas? Not to say I like paying taxes but what makes the military unique to justify this expense. Moreover, considering what Spr Earl stated about UK soldiers having to serve over six months, this really wouldn‘t effect many CF members anyway.

As far as serving longer then six months in an operational theatre, considerable benefits kick into effect for CF members at the 9 month point in terms of extra HLTA benefits and lump sum payment for a bulk vacation. Plus your tax free benefits keep adding up.

The problem with generous benefit package is the cost has to come from somewhere. Although the CBC budget would be a good place to start...we know it would come from DNDs budget. Anyone what to give up more of their ammo for increased benefits?

Finally, in terms of benefits, members of the CF don‘t do too badly. On a recent mission to Africa, I was the envy of all other nations in terms of the support provided to me by my country. This included those from other "western" nations.

Cheers,

Gunner
