So, I got some down time before my tour ends. My current job does not need me anymore due to the new rotation. I am just killing time until I head home.

Not being the type to want to sit around, I offered my skill set to various teams here. I have a fair bit of TI and experience outside the wire, and I am a Chimo...good thing to have on a patrol, no?

So, I ask a certain group if they need me. The answer is a big YES.
I ask my immediate chain of command, they say, SURE.
They ask their superiors if I can go, they say NO. Combat Tourism.

HUH?

Isn't that my job?

Damn I saw the thread title and thought it would give me an alternative to the all inclusive swim up bar for my last week of unbooked vacation this year. 8)

Ah well there is always this option.

That website is hilarious.

The answer to this seems fairly simple. You are an experienced engineer who has managed to survive another tour of Afghanistan. The last thing the CoC wants to do is risk losing your experience to any number of things that can happen during the most dangerous part of a deployment (the beginning of a new rotation for them/the end of a rotation for you). Oh, and the headlines are the worst when they start off with "Soldier on last days of tour killed by IED".

I am sure you are correct, however I don't feel it fits into the category of 'Combat Tourism'

I thought we all signed a contract where we understood that it is a very risky job. As far as I'm concerned I have a job to do.

Oh well. They want to send me home rather than use me for what I am trained for, then so be it.
