Continental Defence Corvette

Some new ways of bolting on capabilities to existing ships and docks.

Interesting stuff on the Lionfish 30
Characteristics:

Rate of fire — up to 200 rounds per minute.
Effective range — 3,500 m.
The mass of the turret without ammunition is 1,450 kg.
The Lionfish 30 turret can fire single shots, continuous bursts, or programmed bursts.
that two trays contain each one 100 linked 30×173 mm ammunition, some more being available in the chute, so the ammo available is over 200 rounds. Ammunition is loaded through a hatch that opens on the left side of the turret, while on the right side another hatch protects servos and on-board electronics.

The X-Gun is a dual feed weapon, therefore the Lionfish 30 can shoot different types of rounds, a key one being the air burst munition. “The weapon will be using ABM ammunition that we are developing with KNDS Ammo Italy, specifically developed for the anti-drone mission,” Luca Perazzo pointed out. The X-Gun has three firing modes, single shot, programmed burst, and continuous burst, up to a maximum of 200 rounds per minute.

Also a 300kg 12.7mm RWS

At sea, or alongside?
Are you allowed phones in OPS when all the equipment is shut down? Or CCR? However because there is no secure processing actually done on the bridge its probably OK when alongside. At sea though, drives me nuts. Especially as the CO does it all the time.

Anyone read this article from a few days ago? Alot of golden information in it from Topshee, on what he want's to see happen regarding the CDC during this calendar year.

Canada's race to build warships: Here's what they'll do, and the yards vying to cut their steel

According to Canada's vice-admiral, we needed the continental defence corvette last year
“They’ll have the fight of the Halifax class,” said Topshee.

Rapid delivery expected

With the Kingston class already in the process of being retired, Topshee wants it fast.

“My heart tells me I need it in five years.

That’s for a first vessel.

And in navy shipbuilding that would be very fast, especially considering no design has been settled on yet.

“I would like to see progress on it this year, an actual procurement step taken,” said Topshee.

“More than a (request for information), we want a (request for proposals), an invitation to qualify for shipyards, a design decision. All of those things

Topshee told The Chronicle Herald, If Irving has that capacity, I would ask them to build the River class faster.”

Last Thursday, the president of Irving Shipbuilding pointed out, "if he had a design and contract in hand", Lesko said, "Irving could be building the continental defence corvette now – on top of the River class and the last two AOPS."
The CRNC was on a podcast I saw today saying the same thing regarding the Corvette program, at least from a capability direction. He wants their fighting capability to be similar to the CPFs, them to be first year ice capable and have a range of 7000nm, with the speed of a warship.

Nothing currently exists with those capabilities.

And the timeline of 5 years is because the sooner we get out of the CPF game the better, as the costs year over year to keep them working just get higher.

Say WHAT? Cellphones (at least when I was still in) were expressly NOT allowed on the bridge at sea unless the MFW was completely shut-off.

They aren't. But reminders and bridge wings are still challenging areas. u shouldn't have your cell phone on you on ship unless you are off duty.

The Finnish Pohjanmaa-class corvette meets everything except range. Not sure if there's a way to increase the range.

However I can see a future government renaming them to Frigates and cancelling the remaining RCD's. I think getting close to the tonnage of the CFP is risky as budgetary sharks will eventually be coming around.

The Finnish design doesn’t meet the requirements to maximize Canadian equipment content and involve domestic Canadian design teams, which is one of the reasons why Topshee seems to be pushing for the adoption of a new ship design.
