Deindustrialization of Canada

I am in no way confused. It’s business, not benevolence. That said, one should take care not to place unions on a guilded pedestal either.
I don’t but the reality is a place unionizing needs the union, a place that already has it may have out grown it usefulness.

My grandfather said it best. A place with no union is generally a good place to work as otherwise they would have unionized. A place with a strong union is generally a good place to work as it ensures your protected. The worst place to work is a weak union workplace as the union doesn’t look after you and the company doesn’t either.

Working in a place with a strongish union I get screwed just as much by the union as I do the company, but at least it sets the bar at a visible level. Pros and cons to it, but generally the larger your workforce the more needed a union is.

Clearly in this case, Amazon didn’t think the juice was worth the squeeze. Yay small businesses!

Not very comforting... all are industries that sustain first world economies - as well as social program expectations:

Amazon’s announcement noted severed employees would get 14 weeks pay. That seems generous for employees with 3-4 years employment at best. In Ontario, the ESA grants two weeks base + a week per year employed.
Nah, even in Ontario is a regulatory bottom end with common law setting much higher standards. Quebec, despite their supposed adherence to statute law has effectively legislated that "reasonable" notice or pay in lieu of must be given, and "reasonable" has been interpreted to be much more than what is codified by statute. Rule of thumb- 4 weeks per year for managers/professionals, 2-3 weeks per year for non.

All that Amazon merch still has to move in Quebec: this is a win for local businesses/Canada Post. Good riddance.
The 'fulfillment' and distribution activity will just be shifted to surrounding jurisdictions. I would suspect the actual movement and delivery of goods is already done by contractors. Unlike the US, I've never seen an Amazon 'last mile' delivery truck and don't think I've seen a Amazon branded distribution truck (i.e. semi).

The grey vans are all over the place here.

Sounds like a good argument for unions with a national presence to step their game up, if there's a likelihood of jurisdictional shifts.
