First of all

what's the difference between a designed marksman and a sniper

second , is there a minimum rank to become any of them or is it just if your an ace shooter

fiinally third and probably the least do you choose the weapon you'll be training with of do they assign it to you?

Here's to canada :cdn:

There is a big difference between a sniper and a DM. The DM is not trained to the level of a sniper,he is given training in judging distance, some field craft, and of course marksmanship training. The DM is simply a soldier outfitted with a scoped rifle of some sort who's role is to engage high priroity targets within the Platoon or Company area of responsibility such as weapons crews, vehicle crews and the like.He is not a counter sniper,or sniper, as they do not have sufficent training or equipment to act in that role. The DM does not get to choose what weapon they will be issued, one is issued (there is a debate going on about that now in Canada).
The guys you see on the news in Iraq with the scoped M14 are DMs not snipers even though they are portrayed as such, usually the best shot in the Platoon or Company gets the DM Rifle after some basic training as described above.

It's not nice to stimulate my curiosity, then go on to not state/speculate the weapons being reviewed/trialed... >:(

The MRS has been field in two systems.

7.62mm AR10T

5.56mm C7CT

Unfortunately there is some big discussion about issue and employment.  Currently the CF has no set DM program, and the DM has been filled by either a rifle platoon employed sniper, or soliders with recce etc, and have been good shooters.  There is still talk of setting some sort of DM course up but I know from discussing this with our Master Sniper there is some aprehension.  1) He (and other unit MSnipers) does not want the AR10T at the Pl level - we argued for an hour or two on this - but he is set in the fact that C7CT should be the Pl DM gun - and the AR10 kept for snipers.

2) Since there is no course there is no standardized doctrine and employment for the DM.  Personally I think there should be two both with AR10's attached to the Pl HQ, and a single DM with a C7CT in the sections.  This gives both the Pl Comd and Sect Comd's a precision platform - out to their respective bubles.

3) With 5 DM pers / PL is allows them to set up on a site and still remain mission capable for over 24hrs.

Well Kev that would be great as long as the OC and CSM don't have C7CTs zeroed to them don't cha think.  ;D  More of why I just LOOVEED ROTO 2......

Personally I like your idea and it was something I had in mind when we deployed(even if it was just soldiers trained in using and zeroing the CT, and then being issued the weapon if the sect required it).  Unfortunatly lack of C7CTs and a general unwillingness to even train the guys saw to it that it never got off the ground.

Yeah - Scotty and I spoke about that - he only wanted HJ and I to have the CT's at the Coy level since he knew we knew how to use them.  I think he was concerned that a young guy who did not know how to the use the scope would shoot the wrong guy.

But you right the OC and Sgt Maj sure "solved" that problem...

Hence why Scotty clawed them back into the cell ---

But it was cool for a while I had my C8, Pistol, C7CT, and Shotgun - Rambo had nothing on me
::)
