hi guys,

i have a general question concerning uniforms.  i am trying to put together a uniform for a friend of mine that used to be in the army from surplus items and although i have collected everything i need i am left with little information on how i should place the insignia on the uniform. specifically concerning 'wings.' i understand that my friend had earned what i believe to be called his pathfinder's wings? (torch insignia) from what little information i have i understand that this should be placed on the left breast above the ribbons.  how far up from the pocket should this be?  also do i also attach other wings along with the torch? (ex. paratrooper wings) if so how far is that insignia from the torch and which one should be on top? i really hope someone can help me as i can find no information on this subject.  i would rather no ask my friend as this is hopefully going to be a suprise.  if anyone knows the correct measurements plez let me know!

many thanks!

Only one set of wings can be fixed on the left chest.  If he/she's got any medals, they have to fit under the wings.  I am not sure exactly how high it goes (would have to check on mine).  If there are other wings, I am not too sure where they go.

so since the pathfinder insignia is better then the general wings (red leaf with wings) in would be placed above the ribbons?  is the pathfinder thing even wings at all?  would that be the right place to put it?

PPF goes on the left breast pocket - below medals - Where the command bage would be located on the right side.

If he served in a Jump company or the CAR, he probably had a white leaf on his jump wings.

The jump wings (cloth) go on the left breats above the medals. The pathfinder torch goes on the pocket below the medals (this should be the metal torch insignia)

metal insignia?  the one i have is cloth.  are you sure this has to be metal?

I've seen cloth jump wings on the DEU Jacket, but not the shirt.

Which uniform are we talking about?  May help guide the conversation.  I am presuming the original post referred to the "Jacket, Service Dress, Man's", or DEU jacket (the dark green one with four pockets).

true but if it is the DEU, as i was assuming, cloth jump wings go above the medals and the pathfinder torch goes on the pocket below the medal centered on tha strip of cloth and the torch is metal in that position.  I have a picture of a buddy of mine who was pathfinder and his deu's are as i am describing.

aesop is correct, I work with a guy that was a clearance diver turned pilot who wears cloth pilot wings above the medals and a mini metal clearance diver pin on the pocket. Same goes for guys with jump courses, mini metal jump wings on the pocket and cloth wings above.

There are situations that you would wear a cloth pathfinder torch, DEUs aren't one of them, I think the blue flight suits would be an example which is why there's probably a badge for it.  Just like the ship's diver dolphins, the only time aircrew that are qualified ship's diver would wear the cloth one, would be on the blue flight suits on the left pocket. The rest of the time it's the metal pin.

thanks so much guys! you are life savers.  now all i have to do is find one of those command badges :(

now can anyone tell me how far up from the ribbons the para badge has to be.  also since he was a pathfinder in everyone's opinion would he have the white leaf para badge or the red one?

The ribbons are placed so that the bottom edge are sitting just above the top of the pocket flap.  The wings go immediately above that.  If he was a pathfinder than the white wings are the most likely but not for certain.  Did he ever serve in the CAR ?

no i know for certain he never served with the airborne regiment, he was with the ppcli does this mean he has white wings or red wings?

another question is, if he has red wings he has a green beret right, but if he has white ones do i have to track down the maroon baret? also what are the requirements for the hite wings?  what are the difference between someone with the white and the red.  i am so confused

As I said before, if he served in a jump position either in a jump company, the CAR or at the parachute school, then he'd have a white leaf. Each of the 3rd Battalions have a jump company, so if he never served in 3PPCLI, 3RCR or 3R22R, then there's a good chance he was never in a jump company. A red leaf means that he completed the basic para course. If he has a white leaf, then he's probably worn a maroon beret at some point as well.

Not all pathfinders have their white leaves, I knew a guy that did the pathfinder course without ever serving in a jump company or the CAR.

As for finding out, why don't you just ask him to tell you about when he was in the military, just be vague and lead him to where you want to go.
