Hi Guys,
Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else but I couldn't find it. The search function never works for me for some reason!

I have an old photo of my great-grandfather who was a member of the 1st Queens Own Regiment... on the uniform, on the sleeve is a badge/insignia(?) of double-axes.

What exactly does this mean? Does it indicate trade?

Thanks,
Sorry if it's a retarded question :)

Double axes should signify he was an Assault Pioneer. An infanteer with training in mine warfare, booby traps, demolitions, construction of field defenses, roadways, etc.

Okay, I think that worked! We still have the cap badge as well...

Thanks for the replies so far!

Thanks guys!

I also just found his attestation papers which was kind of neat. Lots of info on there (kind of creepy at the same time) but fascinating!

I wish my application had only consisted of two pages with hardly any sort of medical! haha... he got off pretty easy!

.... er, except for the whole digging trenches, bullets flying, gone for two years, starving half the time,  prisoner of war thing... but... you know what I mean!
