I'm wondering because I'm going in and wondering what to do with my license.  I am a resident of BC and I have my full class 5 and 6 license (vehicle & motorcycle).  The thing is as I see in the forces we will be moving around alot.  Say once I settle in Ontario since that is were I'm most likey to be since I'm going in as an ATIS tech can I keep my BC license?  I do not want to surrender my BC license but I see in Ontario you're supposed to get a license if youre there for more than 3 months.  What about us in the military?  What did you guys do, did you keep you're license from your home province?  Is it possible to insure a bike or car in another province while having your home drivers license?  Thanks,

Why do you want to keep your BC license so much?  Just curious.  Yes, you would have to switch it once you are posted somewhere.

When you are posted somewhere it is not permanant.  If you are moving from province to province I see no point to get a new license every time.  Now, instead of surrendering my BC license could I go through like a new driver in what ever province it was?

When you get posted somewhere- you surrender your old driver's license and get a shiney new one.  Just think of it as a way to improve your chances of a better picture.  You will not be discriminated against - your new license will reflect the fact that you had a full license from whence you came.  The CF will pay for these changes to happen - it's all apart of your posting.

If you are just going to Onterrible for a trade course, hold off on the license changing.  Wait until your first real posting.

Sorry about this but i'm going to ask a question in this thread also.

After reading this question I searched through the forums and couldn't find anything similiar to it so i'll just ask it in here.

When a member of the CF gets a 404, say even an infantryman, would he/she have permission to drive say..a military truck on weekends off? or are 404's and military vehicles strictly for officers use?

Millitary vehicles aren't only for officers. They are for OFFICIAL use only. You can't go joyriding in them on the weekends (only on timmie runs during the week)

If you are only on course you will not have to change your licence as you are only there temporarily.   When you get posted to a Unit, then you have a new Perminant Address and will have to change your license.   You can not hold more than one Provincial Drivers License.

Once you get posted to a Unit permanently, you will have a fixed period of time, depending on the Province, to change over your Drivers Lic and Vehicle Registration.

Officers in the past were not given 404's as they were not expected to drive.  Today, they get 404's so that they can drive Staff Car and Rentals, should they need to.

404's are for Official use of Military Vehicles.  You can not drive a Military Pattern Vehicle, a Civilian Pattern Military Vehicle or a Vehicle Rented by DND without one.  Your 404's are only valid for the Unit you serve in, so when you get posted, they are no longer valid and you must get new ones issued by your new Unit.

Military vehicles are used for official military duties.... (a coffee run to the Timmy might be considered official)
Using military vehicles for purposes not authorized (eg: weekend joyride) is the equivalent to "grand theft auto" and will get you a couple of things; 1) 404s lifted, 2) charge for missuse of gov't property & fine AND 3) you get into the boss' bad books.... therefore - not recommended!

What would Canada be like without Tim Hortons?
I don't know, but I'd be damn miserable!  :blotto:

... there'd be "Don Cherry's" of course.........

Wow Geo, did you even READ my post (as quoted below)??  The two look awfully similar...

Ok let me get this straight, when I'm in training at the school in Kingston for about a year I can keep my BC license.   But when I get posted I have to get that province's license.   And when you say "I have to", have to by whom?   The Canadian Forces or the Province?   And if I end up not driving then I guess I do not have to change over my license even after being posted right?   And just wondering, how "permanant" is a posting anyways.

You have to by both The Military and the Province. Your drivers permit is the property of the Province in which it was issued. Most provinces require you change your permit after three to six months.

Why do you care so much about keeping the BC License? When you move to another province, if you want to drive, etc you will need to goto a DMV surrounder your current drivers license and get that province's license. When I moved to Alberta from BC, I had to give them my license show proof of my current resisdence in Edmonton answer a few questions and got that print out temp license; a week later I got my alberta license in the mail.

fcm....
it's necessary for you to have a PDL before you get your 404s
If you intend to drive ther car that you have in BC then you have to transfer Registration & insurance to your new province of residence. To transfer registration you better have a corresponding PDL for it.

Now here's the interesting part..........

If you are stopped by the police, they check PDL, registration & insurance + ask you your residence.... what are you going to do?... lie to them?.... that's good for a couple of fines and infractions AND if you tell em the truth... that you've been living in the province for more than the prescribed period.... bingo = you've just earned yourself some other infractions & fines.

What's so special about your BC driver's licence anyway?

if the CF posts you to another province they will pay for the transfer expenses of your personal effects AND personal paperwork... If you have such a problem about paperwork.... you're going to have all sorts of problems in your career within the forces

You sure you want to join?

Nothing personal - just askin.

Cheers!

Again it boils down to another cash grab. But if you move provinces to go to university/college then every year in my case I send ICBC a copy of my registration for school and I can keep my pretty BC linc. It is the same when you get out in that none of your 404 qualifications can be transfered over to your provincial linc. even though all the test were written on the same standard provincial forms(at least in BC). I keep checking on this as with Leopard tank trainers up for sale I sure don't want a ticket for driving  one without the right classifications if I buy one. :cdn:

dunno .... at the time, I got my 404s 1st and then went for my PDL afterwards
got my chauffeur's permit... allows me to drive pert much anything that isn't articulated.... I gave up the bus category cause I didn't want the hassle of a medical every 6 months.

then again - each province is different.

The time you spent typing a question that's already been answered, you could have scrolled up and typed it into the search bar.

Note:   Edited a typo.
