Sten, you speak a world of truth in this matter. Just for clarification, Edie was a Hassidic Jew from Belfast who before the war worked as a cooks assistant on some of the worlds finest ocean going vessels. He volunteered for service in 39, but due to his poor eyesight and flat feet was not found suitable for the infantry. Under any other situation he would have been found unsuitable for military service, however Edie had served a young Monty on a previous voyage and wrote to the General pleading his case. Monty brought Edie on to his staff as his personal chef.

It is said that,Edie fell in to disfavour with the general after being found drunk while on duty in the kitchen. However the true story some say is that Edie was quite a card shark and had several members of the Generals staff indebted to him including Monty and both the padre(P) and Padre(RC).
as a result Edie was transferred to Sicily where he met up with the Seaforths. But don‘t for a minute think that Edie took this transfer lying down...before he was posted he inflicted a little "Delhi Belly" on the General and Staff.

P.S This can all be confirmed through the Junior Rank‘s Regimental Historian, Cpl. Doug "the Bard" Summers. :cdn:

indeed, whilst researching this Man, warrior, Legend, I found that members of the Regimental Association where invaluable resources. combat_medic, I suggest you consult with Sgt Martin Tolton (48th Highrs) who also happens to be a noted Seaforth Historian, or Cpl Glenn "Edie‘s Piper" Jorgensen CD.

In fact at the "Old Iron" in Scunthorpe, Col O‘Dershowitz (Late 1 Cheshires) there can be seen a 1/3 scale statue of Edie frying Monty‘s favorite Saurkraut and Bratwurst.
