Enrolling as an older individual.

IMHO: Prior to entering at 27, I was overly focused on fitness. Although it's important, I exceeded most of the others when in truth, half or more is about mental strength. You'll be sleep deprived in basic training - this is the sorta thing I mean.

Anyway, if I were you, I'd focus on endurance, stamina. If you're out of shape right now, don't slam into fitness. Start slow, let your body adapt to it. You can push to extremes later if you wish. A KEY that the military will not show you, is that you can protect and prevent injuries through mobility and isometric exercises - it strengthen tendons, ligaments and makes your joints (especially ankles) pliable and sprain-proof. This process takes awhile because tendons aren't nearly as responsive as muscle, so I'd heed this advice today. Not just for basic training, but for life long prevention of injury... or the reduction of injury. So in summary, weights training is fine, but it's NOT key. It's a distant 2nd or 3rd or 4th or whatever.

We our basic training at Borden. The fields are riddled everywhere with tank ruts. Some ruts are from when Borden was a tank range for training in WW2. Anyway, there were many sprained ankles in our unit. They could've ALL been prevented, however the military is NOT creative and isn't very resourceful in this respect.
