F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF)

There is some talk about bringing back the F14 as an air to air asset. There is realization that maybe we dont have the assets to deal with the latest PRC and Russian aircraft. In the near term we are dvelp[ing long range air to air missiles to give the F18 and F35 better capability.

Is that talk related to the upcoming release of Top Gun II?  I heard they had an F-14 put on the deck of a CVN as a part of the filming?

No. The Navy has realized that they havent had a pur fighter since the F14.

The F-14 is not coming back anytime ever.  May be a cool looking aircraft but it had its share of issues, including with the Phoenix.

The F14 upgraded beats any current USN air defense fighter. Top ranked radar coupled with AIM-260 would be perfect for Pacific operations.

And a new Tom Cat would integrate well with Canada’s upcoming Arrow 2.

Ottawa formally asks companies to make their pitches to replace CF-18 jets

A decision on the winning bid is not expected until 2022

John Paul Tasker · CBC News · Posted: Jul 23, 2019 1:02 PM ET

The federal government formally submitted requests for proposals (RFP) today to procure fighter jets to replace the decades-old CF-18s.

Four companies are in the running to supply Canada with roughly 80 new jets: Saab of Sweden, Airbus Defence and Space out of Britain, and the American firms Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Those companies have until spring of 2020 to submit their initial proposals to the $19-billion competition. A decision on the winning bid is not expected until 2022 — the military procurement process can take years — with delivery of the first jets expected by 2025.

Maybe a design/airframe like the BUFF that can just keep going and going doing missions for which it is superbly suited (and not needing stealth--NORAD, but in future if Russkie bombers escorted?).

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the F-15 basically an air superiority fighter designed for air to air not air to ground combat. We had that once before with the F-104 Starfighter which we converted to lobbing nukes and after that for low level ground support which didn't turn out all that well.

I thought we were looking for a multirole aircraft.

Just wondering.

The F-15X is a descendant of the F-15E which is a multi-role platform.  It outperforms on many front the F-35 but it is not Low Observable.

I don't want to sound even more cynical than I am but the whole F-15E concept really strikes me as some manager at McDonnell Douglas seeing the end of the early F-15A-D production runs coming to an end saying "you know guys, if we put a few new weapon racks and some new electronics in this bird, maybe we can convince the Air Force to shell out a few dozen billion dollars for another couple a hundred of these things as air to ground planes."

They've been dribbling out a couple of these variants now since the USAF bought around 250 Es in 1985 but these are mostly bought by foreign countries such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Singapore and Qatar. The USAF has only budgeted for 8 F-15EXs with a possibility of another 136 but it's my understanding that this has a lot to do with refreshing its existing aged F-15C,D and E fleets. https://www.janes.com/article/87163/pentagon-budget-2020-dod-eyes-buying-144-total-f-15exs-over-time

I fail to see why any combat pilot who has only a single aircraft type to choose would want to have an airframe originally designed for air to air combat instead of a properly designed multirole aircraft regardless of how much lipstick has been put on it.

The F-15E was originally built in the late 1980s.  It is a proven platform and it does A/G extremely well and A/A really well.  Having flown the Strike Eagle, it has everything we need to do our mission extremely well.  The only thing is that it has 2 seats.

Keep in mind that F-35 is "Joint Strike Fighter", designed at a time when USAF was planning on 750 F-22s for main air-to-air/air superiority role. Then F-22 buy ended up at 187 and F-35 became rather much more multi-role.
