I was wondering the same thing until I realized he's a construction tech.

Perhaps he's not infantry... or perhaps he's been in long enough that he remembers actually using mortars in the infantry (possibly while riding a cheriot..j/k)...

Or even more possibly; maybe, just maybe, we actually use mortars in the infantry...  isn't the 60mm mortar a mortar?
