Australian soldiers on patrol in Afghanistan have shot dead the driver of a car who sped towards them, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) said on Wednesday.

Defence said the soldiers at Tarin Kowt fired at a vehicle when the driver drove towards them after being directed to stop.

"The soldiers responded to the approaching vehicle in a graduated way with verbal and visual signals consistent with their rules of engagement," an ADF statement said.

"When the vehicle failed to stop the soldiers fired at it.

"The driver of the vehicle was killed in the incident."

The ADF has launched an investigation into the shooting, which comes amid an increase in suicide car bombings in Afghanistan.

"Afghanistan remains a dangerous place and the threat of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED) is real," the ADF statement said.

"This was illustrated in Oruzgan Province earlier this month when a suicide bomber killed 17 and injured many more in Deh Rawood."

The ADF said it would be inappropriate to comment further on the shooting until the investigation had been completed.

The troops who shot dead the man were part of the 385-strong Australian contribution to a Netherlands-led reconstruction team in Afghanistan's Oruzgan Province.

There are currently more than 900 ADF personnel stationed in Afghanistan.

Cheers,

You hear of things like this happening and then there are stories such as these in Ruxteds' post...

GOOD NEWS!! http://forums.army.ca/forums/threads/64541.0.html

I don't think it's cynical to assume which type of story the press will want to present to the public ad nausium.

After all, "if it bleeds, it leads"

I hope this gets resolved before the press has a field day with it and turns it into yet another gong show.

All the best to you and your mates Wes  :salute:

You got to love people that do not pay attention and continue on...

It was the last stupid thing he did.
