Any former or current Garry's out there?   My online name should ring a bell with a few of the old warhorses... :gunner:

Indeed... I was but a wee baby at that time.  I got in around 1990, out around 1993.

With all apologies, not the intended reaction, I assure you.   Kind of wish I was still in, but gov't service in another field prohibits that right now...   :cdn:

I served with Lance Wiebe and a few dozen other fine people, 1970-74

Up the Garry's!!!

You know, come to think of it, my name should still be engraved on that trophy, if it still exists.

"Trooper of the Year", or "Top Trooper" or some such trophy.

Back in 72 or 73............

I wonder if it still exists?

I wonder if the Trophy Case in the Jr. Ranks Club still sports the skull wearing the beret, ascot, and cigarette?  Or if they still display the stolen Winnipeg street signs for Fort, Garry & Horace Streets    ;D

Phillman, how long have you been in for?   And Shec, I remeber that trophy case.   The JR Mess underwent a big renovation not long after I left.   I remember the display case with the skull on it.... can't say if it is still there or not.   My contribution to the Mess was a huge photo of a Leopard firing downrange.   It's got to be about 4ft by 3ft and it is an actual photo (on photo paper).   It was at 17 Wing headquarters, and when they renovated the place, myself and another former member convinced them to give it to us as they were going to throw it away.   I may have also liberated a parking sing for the CO of 2RCHA, but of course, I may not have... ;D

Phillman, is the trophy case with the skull still there?

Some bad news first I suppose. For the last couple years the downstairs mess has been closed due to fire regulations. We are currently off the parade square in the NW corner. I think it was the Padre's office at one time.

And the good news, within the next few months (hopefully) we should be moving back downstairs. The skull is still in the trophy case as is the Super Trooper trophy. Kinda wierd seeing the RSM on their as a Tpr in '77.

Blackhorse, I'm coming up on 2 years in Jan. So I'm still a newbie to most people.  And that is one cool picture you contributed to the mess.

I almost forgot, if you haven't yet, you should check out www.fortgarryhorse.ca .

Thanks for the sitrep Phillman & Blackhorse, you've brought up a lot of pleasant memories.    Here's hoping the basement re-opens soon, I don't imagine there is as much room where the mess is now. Nor as much fun (out of sight out of mind  ;) ) :salute:

Typical that the mess is still closed.  I had heard that some time ago, but even I am surprised to hear that it is STILL closed.  It's been awhile since I've been back to the 'Peg, but everytime I do come back, I try to make it down.  One of my friends is a fairly new Warrant Officer, and a Mcpl that has been in for so long he can probably still remember when the Fort Garry Horse actually had horses.  I'm sure you know him, he's a household name with the Garry's... :cdn:

The plaque was put up by a collection of guys who'se names escape me due age dimmed memories.(that's my story and I'm sticking to it!) Whose great claim to fame was that they were the only people, who could drink a rather noxious soft drink called Mr pibb!
The plaque was removed one drunken night ... I remember watching them pull it off the wall It was installed with what looked like six inch screws!!!  :o

I can't remember that plaque.   But then, there were so many plaque's that had been up on the walls that I cannot remember them all.   And I hope that when the JR's is opened again, it sticks to it's roots.   It was a bit of a hole in the wall, but it was a comfortable setting, with a lot of backgound and character.   I don't want to see it turn into some sterile "gentleman's club", like the Minto Armoury JR's club.    :salute:

Here Here !!!   I can only echo that sentiment as I'm sure can many many others.  The fact that the JR was deep down in the bowels of the armoury was a great asset.    Its dungeon-like locale encouraged decorative creativity and allowed for privacy.    And it was ours, a family place, not some kind of public community centre that had to be shared with the other units in District like the composite JR in Minto.

Facta Non Verba and G-d bless all who wore the Gate on the capbadge.

Anyone ever play "Tunnels"?  Or how about the infamous helmet drink?  I hope the traditions are carrying on...
