I came across this video on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-eyuFBrWHs

It was extremely ironic because I had this exact conversation with an American friend on mine two days ago.  And I did enjoy this http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/07/10/fox-attacks-the-environment-they-distort-we-reply/

I love watching the extremes on both sides fighting it out - one sound byte at a time. People seem to choose a side and then find out what their beliefs are, selectively picking up facts and sound bytes.  But here is what I want to ask:

Do you think that American politics and media have become so polarized that they can no longer objectively report the news? If this trend continues would it ultimately lead to a cultural schism - where "Left" and "Right" are so far from eachother,  they can't even communicate?

(or is this way to hot of a topic to discuss)?  ;)

Read some old newspapers, things have been polarized and others been complaining about it since before the United States even existed.

True enough,  but now insted of three newspapers,  we have 10 000 bloggers 30 channels for news promoting a tendentious stance,  or full length documentaries dedicated to destroying an opposing point of view.

In the 1750's and 60's, phampleteers were quite active in debating the pros and cons of the Revolutionary cause, taxation, Federalism vs Monarchy or other systems of government....Blogging is the same idea translated into 21rst century technology.

As for the polarization, since government has grown so large and all encompassing, the spoils of victory are correspondingly that much greater. Is it any wonder that career politicians and their hangers on will expend the time and energy to blacken their opponents if that means they will have access to the machinery of government and the resulting power and perques? As a libertarian, I suggest that diminishing the scale and reach of government power will remove the incentives that drive this polarization, although that will be an epic battle; the incentives appeal to any politician, political activist and the permanent bureacracy, all of whom will fight tooth and nail to preserve their powers and privilages.

So much good international news that Americans now have access to

all news has bias to some degree, most people understand this
people who take either fox news or aljazeera that 100% face value are silly
esp if they do so because it agrees with their preexisting world view
