future in infantry

hey all, i need some input on this:

I've heard that basically if you join the infantry, your days are spent playing cards and sitting around, maybe going on an excersise once a year, and that there generally is nothing to apsire to in the infantry now that there are no more specialists, and that our number of paratroopers is at a good level so there won't be many opportunities to get your jump boots.  Generally, morale is very very low in the brigades.

First off, i'd like to know if most, or any, of this is true. I would also like to know if there would be a half decent future for someone in the infantry if they decided to enlist in the infantry and stay for longer than 3 years. Any information would be appreciated, and personal experience would be great. I'm trying to get to the truth of the matter, and don't much care if the truth is a little "rough around the edges." Cheers -Cameron

Well, my gut feeling and a look at the world tell me that Infantry probably has a brighter future than any other, but I'll leave the detailed questions about unit life to the folks currently serving on Regtl duty. Cheers

As a serving member of 15 years in the infantry I can tell you, yes you will spend some days sitting around (or cleaning the same Coleman stove over again) But you will spend more days on course learning something or as you gain experience teaching something to those that don't. As to one EX a year- - - well the only time that has happened to me is when I just came back from Bosnia and my Bn had recently just moved from Calgary to Edmonton.

Most of what you heard probably comes from the whiny little shots who plague every unit, they piss and moan that they never do anything and when they have to do some thing they piss and moan about how hard done by they are!

Given current events around the world the Infantry will always have places to go and ops to do!

[sarcasm] Except our unit, seems like all we're good for these days is plugging holes in other BN's so they can go overseas or, eatin  Personal Pan ©   pizzas.[/end sarcasm]   ;D

are you supporting teflon's comment or not? but i think the infantry has its ups and downs , but when you do get to do our job , i think its the best one in the military, when you were a kid , did you play army being a truck driver or postie(no offence) or were you playing a soldier shooting guns? We are in a job where its " break glass in case of war" and when there is no current op for us , we sit around and play cards and clean stoves! comes with the trade.

As a matter of fact no, I'm not supporting his comments. The 2nd BN, in my eyes is a replacement/filler BN for the other 2 BN's within the BDE.

i foresee the 2 bn PPCLI becoming like the 2bn RCR in gagetown, move of a traning btln for the new WATC in Shilo, its sad but true. Trying to get out of 2VP would be very hard now.
