has anyone heard anything bout more western reserve heavy armoured units going recce and NBC ? We‘ve been hearing threats an hints...ominous rumblings from above. Usn SALH‘s are getting a tad worried. Thanx.

All Res Armour will be Recce. The RCD, 12 RBC will be Recce Surv, the Strats will have 2 Tank Sqns and 1 Recce Sqn . Until they get rit of the tanks complete sometime next yr.

why exactly are they getting rid of the tanks anyways?

I hate to say it, but the government is right. We don‘t need to keep our tanks because if there ever was a situation where they were needed, how would we get them there?

With our logistics and our budget, it doens‘t work. However, the government isn‘t cutting them for this reason, its simply for money purposes I suspect.

We require Tanks for one reason. A country without Tanks, has no Ground Offence Force. We used Tanks in Kosovo. We require a light tank not a M1, Leo2, etc.

Dave, what do you think about the Stryker or some type of wheeled DFS vehicle?

Trust the goverment to screw-up even the simplist
concept.I do not know of any military that does not have Armour units. We need tanks & the support
units to defend our borders & support the ground forces.

There is nothing like the sound of Armour rolling
down range when your a$$ is in a crack & you need
to some serious fire power.

Sometimes i think the decision making process in
Ottawa is 18 rounds short of a full mag. The sad
part of this is that we elected these spuds.

 :cdn: :tank:

John, The Stryker sucks, the 105 cannot fire over the side. I‘m in the Recce Troop (Trg) here in Gagetown and some of us think the panic will be on. To run Recce Courses this Fall. I‘m DS on the Phase 4 Recce (Reg) this Summer. The CTLC this summer will be the last one also. And the AFVCC is changing also.
I‘m the NBC/Camo guy here. We have new kit for NBC, Camo, Surv coming and some level 3/4 security kit. So we will be busy this fall. But the tanks will be all gone soon. We did to ourselves. Canada could have bought a light tank, but no! The dinasours in Ottawa waited for a heavy MBT. Now gone. :tank:

Recce41...so even the Strats are will be losing the tanks as well? I agree with you though, we need some form of Tank for the reason you stated above. Go figure, we recently upgrade the things then pitch em...

We‘ve heard in the news and from McCallum that US and Canadian militaries would be more co-ordinated for continental homeland defense. Given recent stuff in the news, is the Canadian armoured corps being oraganized because of this or inspite of this? It just that the leadership has to (or must, or should?) know the impact.

The Armour Corp is going Recce due to 99% of tours are for Coyote. Also for cost effective reasons.

Thanx so instead of being in the cougars pretending to be in leopards we will be in the cougs pretending to be in coyotes. Ahh yes the infinite wisdom of the canadian government is now ohh so clear. Whats next replacing infantry with targets and the arty guys get slingshots?

No, ALL Armour will be Recce. Cougars are gone too. Res will have LUVWs.
:mg:

ah christ thats bull! What are they gonna do with the coug‘s? Send em to the fricking Congo, seriously, I love that piece of junk like a child and so do my driver and crew commander. Much as i love the iltis... theres a big diff between firing a 7.62 from the c6 and firing a 76mm HESH round.

If they get rid of the coug‘s Im contemplating getting out. It‘s a passion y‘no. Y‘take away Dionysis an whats left...

A bloody iltis nicknamed the DeathTrap, that all.

Talk about passing away of an era. SALH just bit the dust. We‘ve been heavy for god knows how long.

It‘s like telling me to murder my own kid, and i aint no Lady Macbeth.

Might as well disband Armour all tgether. It‘s a crying shame.

sorry thats a bit of a rant there but as you can see im a wee bit cut up. I just hope someone up there comes to their senses long enough to see the mistake that is being made. We have made our point time and time again, we are indispensable, not the lumbering behemoths everyone assumes...I guess you‘d have to be there, but pretty soon it will be it‘ll all be past tense. I don‘t wanna tell new recruits "She was a thing of beauty, and an object of power, a balanced blend of speed and accuracy, but, ach, you had to be there."

In the Garries we are getting our Gwagens supposedly, but we have basically been infantry for 2 years now as we have not replaced any Iltis as they break down, there was even some talk about re badging us to engineers, but that was scraped as they started an engineer unit attached to us. so for the time being we are infantry recce unit they set out the doctrine( which hasn't been written yet by the way) for the new Gwagens and how to do recce in them. :cdn:

Rant on

Cost effective? The Gov'ment is spending 600 million to buy 66 MGS POS meanwhile just recently 150 Leopard 1A4's were bought by Italy(?) at a cost of 700,000 euros a piece. Still think the MGS is a cost effective purchase?

At the price the Italians paid for their Leopards we could have three full armoured regiments and enough money left over to buy the GD boat to get them to where we want them.

The government got rid of the Leopards because they (the liberals) never wanted them in the first place and the public would rather spit quarters down the black hole of healthcare from now till eterity rather than spend money on the defence of the nation or the good of their troops serving overseas.

I find it amazing that our government talking heads were calling Tanks "Cold War Relics" as the American M1's were rolling down the road to Bhagdad at the tip of the spear. Cold war relics my A$$!

Rant off

Sorry, but the Cold War is over.  We do not need tanks, ADATS, etc to guard against the Russian Bear.  We are a tool of the government.  Government policy drives defence expenditures.  As long as we are in Afghanistan we will focus on being a light force based on LAVs/coyotes and infantry.  I fully agree that Canada does need a MBT and that the government may be playing with fire in the future.  Without a strong armoured presence on the Battlefield we will get mopped up pretty fast. I am sure that when the Russian Bear awakens, there will be a mad scramble to purchase the MBT.  If the Canadian government and public were willing to deploy us to Iraq, they would have seen the need for a MBT.
