Yes, enough about Taliban Jack, grim predictions of the Apocalypse by the Green Party, if what's his name is a leader or not or any of the other nonsense flowing down Parliament hill; we have really important news for political junkies!

Return of the Rhino's

I'm a long time fan of the Rhinoceros Party, and have lamented their absence from the landscape before (and here). For those who don't know, The Rhinos roamed the Canadian political landscape from 1963 to 1993. In 1993 Parliament amended the election act to, well basically outlaw The Rhinos.

Well, they're back. On Tuesday, Rhino Leader-shmeader, Brian (Godzilla) Salmi, announced he will run as a Rhino in the Sept. 17 federal byelection in Montreal's Outremont riding. And they're serious, they even have a real website, with links and pictures and things.

Personally, I'm getting in on the ground floor and joining this up and coming force in the political landscape.

Long Live the Rhino, and thank God we are getting some levity back into Canadian politics.

I missed Le Parti Rhino, and welcome their return as well.

Right on.  I hope they revisit some of their party platform from yesteryear.  My favourite being the return to driving on the left hand side of the road like in the UK.  They had an ambitious plan to phase it in so as to ease Canadians into it.  They were going to start with trucks first. ;D

One of my faves was to relocate the Rocky mountains between Ontario and Quebec.

The Party Platform is hilarious

Didn't they want to cut up New Brunswick to fill in the swamps in Ontario?  Sounds like a damn fine idea. ;D

Good Lord, all we have to do now is book him on "saturday night live" and drum up some support. ::)

I remember that well! I also remember trying to explain the rhino party to some south americans who just had their 3rd free election, they took democracy far more serious than we did.

And who can forget the Left Honourable John Turner in Vancouver?  Between the new election finance laws (and a bankrupt Liberal party) and the Rhino comeback, I'm almost looking forward to the next campaign season.

Tonight is the Throne speech, and a potential election. For those of you not satisfied by the current political parties, get involved here.

We have enough humourless parties and party leaders (although some parties provide lots of unintentional humor), and a surge in support for the Rhino's might send a much stronger message to Ottawa than spoiled ballots and refusing to get out and vote.

Hmmm... Duceppe & Layton are looking to bring the Gov't down.  Dion may be dull, may not have charisma & may change his position as often as he changes his underwear BUT, he isn't stupid... I say that either the Libs will vote with the Conservatives or there will be a bunch of Libs missing in the house - so that the Cons WILL have a majority.

That works two ways also....there can be a bunch of Conservatives not in the house for the vote also.....

Dion may just go for it.... The poll on CTV last night put the libs at 29% and the conseravatives at 34%....with a 3% variance...not that unrealistic..

This hadn't occured to me but I suspect you're right.
I think we have the spoof party of our dreams in the current liberals......
Chretien's' memoirs just out - new infighting - nothing is funnier than real life!  ;D

Maybe what will happen is that liberals will slip out to the bathroom,
one by one ..........I can just picture Dion spiking the chili.....  ;)

So, the Rhino party is back?  :D

Can't wait to see Saskatchewan paved all over as a giant parking lot!  ;D

I loved the Rhinos.
It looks to me like Dion is backpeddling as hard as his legs will go in order to avoid an election. although the sheeple in Ontario are still reportedly holding the Libs at 40%. I might be able to understand that they don't like the Cons but after the poor showing of the Libs on so many issues, including the huge scandal of ADSCAM, why are they still supporting them at 40%?

That just blows me away.  Is Ontario such a back-water infested area that they STILL think Harper eats babies for breakfast and attends KKK meetings?

The one thing, though, is that it would be interesting to see how the polls would be riding by riding.  I mean, I could understand if 98% of some ridings in the "416/905" area go all red, but overall, what is the support in Ontario outside of Toronto?

I'm not sure if they have a breakdown of the poll but here's the link to the story

I quite simply do not believe the Ontario numbers.  I'd make a bet that the majority (and I mean the vast majority) of the people polled live in the GTA.  Most of Ontario is not liberal red or NDP  orange.

YES

Moving on to the recent  Ontario provincial election. John Tory and the Progressive Conservative Party, love that part "progressive" ..seriously,  were in a strong position at the beginning  of the campaign, he consistently out polled McGuinty as the preferred leader. Then he went and pushed faith based schools and basically lost the election. So my point is, inspite of the above, the PC party of Ontario could have won this election and probably with a wide margin.
Which reminds me, when Tory ran for Mayor of Toronto he pushed incineration of garbage. Again a smart capable individual seriously damaged his campaign by pushing a politically suicidal policy.
