Turthfully, our Priest sucked in the entire congregation with that bad joke, about 3 weeks ago. Granted, he had previously fallen victim to it, himself  :)

Regarding the Pope being a member of the Hitler Youth, just remember, if you had been his age in 1941 and lived in Germany, you would have been in the Hitler Youth, too. It was mandatory to join it. He got out of it when he went to the seminary to study for the priesthood.

thats the funniest thing i heard in a while bigfoot.wonder what his wave to the people is gonna look like.  :ohahaha/just couldin resist

In the final mos of WW2 apparently he served in an anti-aircraft gunners position. It was on CNN. Im not sure if Im comfortable with that, butI guess if the church is fine with it....

So what? He was conscripted into the military. I am surprised that people here are so willing to judge him based solely on the fact that he lived through the realities of war on the other side. I personally have met a few clergymen who fought for the Germans in WWII. They were not Nazis, they were not hate filled people. THey simply did what they were forced to do. Before judging his background, look at the circumstances he grew up in. I will say it again, if you grew up when and where he did, you would have had to do the same things he did.

Please amuse me and explain what interference that will have in his being the Pope?

One brief period of time, in his youth, when he did things for his nation, he is to suffer now??

Is his service to the Almighty, from then until now, not worthy of recognition??

He served as did most of us, and then went and took the calling, and became God's loyal soldier on Earth to lead us, is that not enough??

Trinity,

Please wade in before I start slotting these Godless heathens in my own crusade!

As a youth he served his country because he had to, like many Germans he was a victim of circumstances.

As pope he'll more or less transcend any concept of nationalism so I don't think we have to worry about him Goosestepping around the Holy See, I think taking the Nom De Guerre is somewhat significant of that.
God doesn't care what country you're from believe it or not.

On another note, wasn't this conclave incredibly short?

I sure hope that wasnt pointed at me.  :threat:

I was pointing out what some people on CNN were making an issue of. Keep your safety on chief.

Not being a catholic myself I couldnt care less. But I know this WILL be an issue with my Jewish family members. Jewish people have a hardtime differentiating between WW2 soldier and SS hate monger. I suppose that their issue though. Im not saying anything about his service to his religion.

Crusade elsewhere.

Actually no. I would have been round up into a nice little camp. If I bothered let them take me at all. ;D

Easy there slick, being a Catholic I DO CARE!.   And how WILL it be an issue??   That's a harsh statemnet regarding differentiating bewteen a soldier and an SS deviant. You trying to draw the sword for what reason mate??   Equating the head of Catholosism will be hard to distinuguish from a worm who served the SS?

Give us a break with your balmy statements, and then trying to bin it on CNN or what your relatives will perceive.

IIRC he was an HJ for two years which was not surprising being that age at that time... what with it being 'non-optional' and all that. He also served for a few years before deserting in 1944 and ending up in a camp himself if memory serves.

So, while one might be tempted to joke and say things like "Willkommen zum papacy früher bekannt als der SS! Heil!!" I am not sure there is much ground to do so.

hmmph. The Jewish community has been at odds with the Catholic community for some time. JP2 worked on bridging that gap. I can see some hardliners on the Jewish side using this as ammo. But I mean obviously Im just trying to inflame you. ::)

Im not blaming "the church". Im saying it isnt a politically bright move. Of course religion isnt about politics.

Feel free to PM me Tess if you have anything relevent to say.
