I heard a rumor that the CF may be replacing the Elcan with EoTech sights. Is this confirmed?

Might want to start thinking/wondering about more relevent things like prepping for BMQ, etc than that kinda stuff..

The EoTech is standard on the C8s and the C79 Elcan sight comes with the C7A1/A2 and C9s varients. An guys have acquired EoTechs for their C7s an C9s aswell. Plus theres the guys with their own purchased sights, etc.

I have prepared as much as I can for BMQ and I am just curious, I dont see why that is a problem.

Thanks for the answer though, I was under the understanding that troops couldnt modify they're weapons with un-issued kit, guess I was misinformed

You can't do a permament mod or dick around with the actual operation of the rifle. But adding sights, RAS handguards, etc is good to go(unit dependent).

Where are you hearing these rumors(eotech replacing elcan), etc ?

Certainly it is.  Now if you search the forums of "Elcan" you will get four pages of hits on discussion threads.  Do you not think that if there was a solid rumour of replacing the Elcan sight, and certainly if it was confirmed, there would not be a current thread on it?  Because once such a rumour has traction, it will be followed by many asking when they can expect it, why the distribution plan is screwed and why they can't just magically replace them all at once.  Weapon and ancillary equipment purchases for army wide usage are rarely (i.e., never) kept secret until they arrive in your weapon lockup.

But will most likely not be permitted during BMQ.

Oh okay, guess you do learn something new everyday.

and CDN Aviator, I'm sure heh. There is nothing more I can do to prepare other than what I am doing now. But I guess I will find out in 3 days :D

As for searching. I did see the post about the Elcan vs EoTech but from what I understood from that only Armour troops get them with the C8. Then i saw something about them being available for other soldiers but that post was, I think, done in 2004. Thanks alot for the information though.

Yeah I am aware of that. I do understand they dont want you to be training with a bunch of stuff on your weapon before you get the basics down.

The C8 is not an Armoured only weapon. Lots of Infantry, Medics, Signallers, Engineers, etc have gotten the C8.

An from what I've seen all C8s come with the EoTech sight, minus the older C8s with the fixed carry handle. Some units will issue the Elcan an Eotech with the C8 aswell.

The C79 could never be replaced by the EOTech - they're designed for entirely different roles.  I don't know how it works with other units but for us, anyone using a C8 (offrs/medics/sigs/etc) was issued an EOTech which was then placed in a pelican case where it will likely sit all tour.

Given that the average distance of engagements for prior BGs has generally been beyond 100m, the utility of an EOTech is questionable.  For roles other than the BG, I can't say.

Not that this thread is even worth it, but I'm killing time, so I'll throw in my knowledge on the topic.

The word is floating around that Eotechs are actually quite common for weapons on tour, but not to expect them. Anyone might get one, but there are no plans for individuals to be drawing Eotech-equipped weapons, as the C79 is handy for searching for targets/areas with some stand-off, whereas the eotech is limited for anything that the C79 can do.
