I am living in a 2 bedroom, 1.5 story PMQ in Greenwood.  Under 1000 square feet.  It was renovated a couple of years ago. New windows and doors etc.  Also, it is all electric heat with a Daikin Heat Pump.  I have been told that heat pumps are suppose to be very efficient.  For the months of Dec and Jan I used the heat pump for all my heating only supplementing it with baseboard heaters on a couple of day.  For that 63 day period my electric bill was $860.  Does that sound excessive to anyone besides me?  My usage of things like the stove, washer and dryer haven't changed since the previous billing period.

You're not the only one.  We live up the Eastern Shore, our power bill for the same period has gone up about $600 -$700 too, not sure of the how or why as yet.  NSP, gouging you every which way they can.  The bastards...

Check to see if you had a Rate increase during this billing cycle?
My local hydro switched to monthly billing in Dec, and snuck a 20% hike in with it I went from $500 for 60 days to $450 for 30 days.

Oh, there's always a rate increase with NSP.  That's their favourite activity, other than planning the next one ad nauseam.

Not saying that this might be the issue, but are you in a row house?

I only ask because a neighbour in Petawawa some years back discovered that his power was retardly high as well. After some digging and tracing wires he discovered, with the help of an electrician friend, that his Q was powering the other two.

Yup, welcome to Emera-land. They You have to pay for a fancy new cable stretching from Newfoundland to Cape Breton.

:nana:

Next thing you know there will be a fixed link .......

You just remember that we're helping save you from another Churchill Falls. I'm fine with the cable, actually. I just hate the hand out form that Emera seems to have taken.

I wonder what we could call that fixed link? Homage to Trouty, perhaps?

Here is a measure for you guys in Nova Scotia.

My NSPower bill was $908 for this billing cycle this year, and of that I estimate $700 of it was heat. Sadly it's better than the $1100 monster I got last year and this year I had the bank account more than ready for it.  January 1st is when they kick in their rate increase (~3.5% increase) so your first bill of the year will have that show, and also typically will be the highest if you are on electric heat since that accounts for the peak of the heating season.  My house is heated by a 16kW electric hot water boiler to 4 radiator zones and its a very open 2150 sq ft row house end unit (< 2 years old new construction).

Thermostats are set at 61 deg F except for the baby's room which I have it at 63 deg F.

I am looking at probably a heat pump if natural gas doesn't come up the street anytime soon.

I've got a ground sourced heat pump. I fucking love it.

When we were looking for a house the method of heating was number one on my list of concerns. No way was I having oil or electric and she wasn't keen on wood so we lucked out finding our place when we did. I have an airtight jobby in the living room to make up heat on the really cold days and to keep the pump from running all the time.

My wife estimates that we spent about 700 bucks on heating and cooling last year.

I'll let that sink in.

That would not even cover me for two months on the budget plan.  :'(

Wow, I only spend close to $200/month on the equal payment plan with NFLD Power....... how much are you guys paying per kWh? I am paying 11.171 ¢ per kWh

How many sqft are you heating with your 200/month? It does make a big difference.

I think I'm paying 13 or 14.

Not sure on the square footage but its a 4 bedroom two storey house with basement......

Remind me not to not ask for a posting to the East Coast. 13 cents a kwh??? I thought Ontario was gouging us....

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in Ontario, we're paying $0.1084/kWh, $0.1444/kWh and $0.1634/kWh for off-peak, mid-peak and peak rates respectively - once you've factored in all the extra charges on top of the standard rates.  That doesn't take into account any fixed charges your utility company makes ($9.42/month in Ottawa).

Oh, and if that wasn't bad enough - for half of your weekday hours, you're on mid-peak or peak rates.

I love BC Hyrdo's rates

6.8 Cents a kWh  once (approx) 1350 kWh is reached (over a billing cycle) the rate increases to a staggering 10.19 cents kWh....

Is that all, including all taxes & fees?  Ontario's rates appear lower, but there are a number of add-ons that double the cost.

(And don't get me started on the "Clean Energy Rebate", an attempt to bribe us with our own money - it's a temporary rebate of about 10% to hide the spike in our bills caused mostly by paying multiples of the market price for so-called renewable energy.)
