It's the other way around. TELUS (along with the other ILECs) has to provide access to parts of its infrastructure to competitors, at governed rates. The big companies at least among themselves would probably come to agreement even without government intervention. Competitors are pretty much free to build out stuff where they want to, if they want to.

Governments usually settle for structuring things so that small companies can compete in the most lucrative and low-cost markets (ie. the low fruit), and then subsidize companies to provide services where there is no viable market. See also: election and re-election.

Ultimately, telecom is one of the things that is a natural monopoly (which is almost always the case with utilities). That is the root of all the absurd notions people have and repeat.

Have you and YTZ lived or worked for a prolonged period of time in Europe or are your experiences with their HSR the results of business trips and vacations?

Worked? No.

Some familiarity through visiting family and tourism.

I would point out a few things. To begin with, service is not even throughout Europe. And next their regular speed rail service is faster, more frequent and more reliable than VIA. In fact, in some cases, they don't count services that would be considered HSR in North America.

Next, I am guessing it's been a while since you've lived in Europe and must not be aware of their HSR ambitions. The EU is funding and developing a continent wide HSR network which includes sleeper HSR trains. Things are changing over there too.

All of corporate Canada is like five oligopolies in a trench coat. But their apologists live to pretend that this is free market capitalism while hiding behind the government's skirt.

CN and CP are great companies.... For their shareholders. Just like Bell, Telus, Rogers, Air Canada, WestJet, Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro, TD, RBC, BMO, Scotiabank, etc. They do shit all to build the country though. And with the exception of a few banks they are so poorly managed, they wouldn't survive a day in an actually competitive market so they never leave Canada. Just milk Canadians. It's great for my RRSP. But as a citizen I'd actually like better public services.....
